Title: Not to beat a dead horse - but VS strikes again
Post by: Rob Hilding on May 14, 2008, 03:32:29 PM
As some of you know (and deeply envy ;D), I have a V-rod and posted on and contributed to 1130cc.com

Until today - VS has taken it over and seriously f'ed it up, too.

It may be time to declare war on Canada [cheeky]

But seriously, the comments about the changes and the Premium and Lifetime memberships, blah, blah blah are VERY similar to what we saw on TOB changes.

I'm now a former member of three VS owned forums.

Oh, well change is good - at least in the case of the DMF [thumbsup]

I hope the new V-Rod forum I registered for today turns out half as good as this place.

"Bet you don't know what you got til it's gone"

"Bet you don't know what you got til it's gone"
That's a basic truism.

Ducapainter, you want to start a V-rod forum?  [laugh]

just kidding.

We should start a new section just dedicated to VS casualty stats.

Why not?

We don't know anything...

and we can do it better than them.   ;D

Well, we just need to have the right setup of forums so it doesn't get too discombobulated. I figure something like these:

Pushing your bike-do's and don'ts.

Leaning, and how to avoid it.

Checking for oil underneath to make sure some is in the bike.

Gear, and how it'll hurt your riding.

Chrome polishing-how often to do it on a bike I don't ride?

Making it louder-Can you hear me now? We can fix that.

Tattoos, tassles, beards, and why you need them!

I could go on  :P

Your mean  :P  But funny  [laugh]

Yep, we could do it better than VS, since we actually ride bikes, own bikes, and have been to major bike weeks across the US.

Anyone know if the other takeovers have been quite as feisty as this one? Have other forums been created out of the fallout? I never really posted at Ducati MS but it still seems to be fairly busy.

My understanding is no one on the other boards had any warning.

One day they logged on and there was the 'new' site.

And they paved paradise, put up a parking lot.

And around that parking lot they put billboards. Hundreds of blinky flashy obnoxious billboards that pop-up when you least expect it.

Now you've got me singing:

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky,
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

big (little boxes, on the website, little boxes full of ticky tacky!"

I also post at sportbikes.net.   I noticed about a month ago that my thread subscription emails from an address that used to be @sportbikes.net is now @verticalscope.com.  I loathe the day that I log on to that site and find it ruined.  But I know it's coming.

Ducati.ms seems to have been less affected than DML.  A lot of the old regulars jumped ship, but the site still remains for the most part.  I think it came from a much less tight-knit grassroots community than DML.  This is my observations, I was not a part of either in the beginnings.

FWIW: According to a friend of mine at SBN, they have an agreement with VS: they just host and do ads but don't own them.

If I remember correctly, Ducati.ms pre VS wasn't as unique as the DML in terms of user interface or number of members, or age, so it may not have been such a drastic transition.

Yep, you're right.  I actually just went over and searched for threads on it and Fred Folkerts, the owner, did post about it.  They provide the ads (not anything near as invasive as DML) and that's it.  I actually posted a message with the story of what happened with DML and pleaded Fred not to ever sell to them no matter what they offer him.

VS is the borg of internet communities.

You will be assimilated...

How long till they try and get our 8 mods to sell?
