Title: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: hcomp on March 10, 2009, 08:18:21 PM I am almost done with my first mold for a windscreen for the 696/1100. Feel free to give me feedback good or bad. I will probably end up doing this piece in carbon. Here are the pics..

All the screens I've seen so far look like a little hat sitting on the headlight to me. Just my opinion.
Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: OstOgBajer on March 10, 2009, 09:08:50 PM I don't think that bike looks good with any windscreen, but yours looks better than most I've seen. Maybe if it wasn't as tall?
Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: hcomp on March 10, 2009, 09:59:55 PM Thanks all, I would agree about the hat. The headlight is so low on the 696 it is hard to make a windscreen look good. We are trying to achieve an actual wind blocker without looking ridiculous. I did a photoshop of a lower windscreen for comparison. However, the wind will more than likely still hit you. Our aero guy gave us the basic height to prevent most wind from hitting the rider, but at the cost of aesthetics.
Here is the 2 comparisons with somewhat stock colors. Lower (http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9809/lower.jpg) Normal (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3034/taller.jpg) Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: OstOgBajer on March 10, 2009, 10:12:22 PM Not bad. That lower version definitely looks better. I'd be interested to see it if you match the pearl white and matte black of the gas tank similar to what you have pictured.
Did you shorten your turn signal lights? Looks good. Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: 1313 on March 10, 2009, 10:36:37 PM I like the curvature of the screen but it's something about the hard edges that don't feel right to me. Below is a picture of the DP screen I installed. This screen flows and doesn't have any sharp points.

Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: Mojo S2R on March 10, 2009, 10:50:16 PM a screen that surrounds more of the headlight would be more pleasing to my eye. All the screens I've seen so far look like a little hat sitting on the headlight to me. Just my opinion. I have to agree with howie that most all the fairings I've seen for the new Monsters look like little hats or just an afterthought. I think yours is one of the best I've seen though. I also think that if you widen your prototype and take the sides down to end where the metal and plastic light surround meet it would look better. I think the height is fine, just need to make it look even more like a true fairing. Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: He Man on March 10, 2009, 10:53:02 PM does it work though?
Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: hcomp on March 10, 2009, 11:12:50 PM Wow, thanks a bunch! Yes, I removed the spacers in the indicator lights (very easy mod!) We were playing around with some photoshop jobs with a bigger fairing, but they look a bit weird. We did do one with the headlight integration, aka sport classic and one that intersected the headlight frame, but we could not settle on a design that looked good and was practical for mounting. The points are still a bit sharp still and we will probably end up softening them a bit. We are trying to match the profile lines of the tank in order to bring some cohesiveness to the design. Does it work? I don't know yet, I will have to make an actual piece to test. The piece in the pictures is made of foam and bondo and weighs about 10 lbs! We are still sanding and sculpting the mold so I wanted some opinions before we fire away on a final design. I may sharpen the angles a little bit on the bottom to give a sharper contrast. I would totally agree with the original design as an after thought and it is not integrated. At least with the DP they matched the dash profile.

Hmm. Interesting concept, I will see if that can be done. It may give us some additional bracing.....THANKS!! Where do we send the royalties? Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: z0mb1e_DUC on March 11, 2009, 03:46:48 AM good looking piece. Definitely the best I've seen so far. [thumbsup]
Maybe if you rounded the top edge off a little more? I like the fact that you are trying to carry the profile of the take. It makes for consistency. Just not sure I like the way the two lateral elements come to such pronounced points at the top edge. This may also just be nit-picking, too. I would like to see a screen with the headlight incorporated, not just sitting on top of the headlight. Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: monstermania on March 13, 2009, 07:42:44 PM It would be great to come up with one that incorporated the headlight , and came up high enough to keep the wind off us for freeway riding, and could easily and quickly be installed and taken off as needed. One that we could put on when taking off on a long freeway ride, and take off when back riding in the city. That's what I am looking for, if you come up with that, I'm in!!!

Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: Special K on March 14, 2009, 08:23:24 AM I like it. It echos the design of the tank which nobody else has bothered to do. the dp screen looks out of place. I would favor the higher or "normal" size. I don't see the "lower" version offering any more wind protection than the stock piece so what would be the point? It's a tough call, you'll never be able to get it high enough to get great wind deflection without looking funny. Also, any larger would require bracing and that's another can of worms. I think you've split the difference nicely.
Carbon fiber is nice but I'm with the crowd that would like it in the stock colors with a clear or smoked plastic center portion. Nice work, I think I'll want one. Any ideas on price? Does this make use of the existing hardware that secures the bikini windscreen? Title: Re: Opinion Needed for 696/1100 windscreen Post by: hcomp on March 14, 2009, 11:46:58 AM We want to keep the windscreen within the $150 range. The big problem we face is doing the smoke screen. A solid color would keep production costs down, but I definitely think the stock colors with smoke screen would look the best. I am also going to investigate a quick change option and I might have that figured out.

I'm wondering if that bikini windscreen offers any wind protection at all. If it does, I would put it on.
