Title: Miles on odometer
Post by: abz2007 on March 12, 2009, 08:30:18 PM
Hey guys,

I'm pretty new here and still haven't got a monster yet. I found a pretty good used monster in the classified here. However, the seller told me that the miles on the odometer is way off from the actual miles. The actual miles is actually around 3000 while on the odometer is 1000. He just told me it was the previous owner's fault and he doesn't have clue about it. Will this cause me trouble when registering the bike? Anyone know how can it be fixed?

Cheers,

I would be skeptical...  First, two owners and only 3000 miles.  Second, either something is wrong with the tachometer (which are expensive to replace) or it has been replaced which is why the mileage is only at 1000.  Ask questions...

I had that problem once. Turns out the bike was put together with pieces from many salvaged bikes.
Be wary young padwan.

Is this really a big problem? I already went to see the bike and it just seem to sound damn fine.. He said that it has a clear title and the bank still holds it. and one more thing it does have a slightly bent clutch lever since it has been tip over before. Other than that it just seems pretty nice.. Does $4800 worth it for this 2006 monster 620? Need some more feedback before i pull the trigger. [moto]

My bike had to have the gauges (and all that goes with it) replaced at 1400 miles (warranty), and the shop made a big deal about it.  It is noted under my seat and I was given signed documents accounting for it.  My bike has the immobilizer crap on it, so that could make a difference.  Fine line between getting a good deal and getting screwed.  On the other hand, there are a lot of people that need money right now and will sell non essentials cheap.  Maybe have a Duc mechanic check it out.  If the guy is being straight with you, I doubt he would mind.

i would want more details if i where you. however, if the seller was trying to screw you, he never would have mentioned the discrepancy, as the lower mileage looks better for resale.

just my .02....

This is a valid point. But there also has to be some documentation.  I know in VA, if a vehicle is sold and there's been a change to the odometer it has to be noted on the title.  So I'd see if you can get some more info.  Your seller might be an upright guy... though the previous owner might not have been so much.

Meh, I was the 3rd owner of a 620 with 2500 miles and it was a great little bike.

Got any more details on it?  Any mods?  OR is it a bone stock 620?

Also - is the maintenance up to date?  For example, the cam belts.  They are a 12k mi or 2 YEAR replacement item.  So if they are the original belts, they are long over due for replacement.  Not sure of shop costs in your area - but figure you'll get charged 2 hours for that job.  Hydraulics ever been flushed?  If no... another hour.  You see where I'm headed...

Yup, it is basically stock with a tail chop and bar end mirrors. I dont know about the cam belt but i guess he has not change it yet since he didn't mention anything about. All he did said was the oil change on 600 miles. Correct me if I'm wrong here but as far i know changing the belt would only take about 30 minutes right? why would the shop gonna cost me 2 hour for it? I'm in nashville by the way. very hard to see some monster down here.

There are 2 timing belts and if you are good with tools it should not take long.  Make sure you line up all the timing marks on the gears BEFORE you remove them and also mark the dots and the case in the same spot so when you put it back together you can line the marks up and know it is right.  Then rotate the engine a couple of times after the new belts are on and make sure it still all lines up.

600?  Hmm so it's due for an oil change too.

I said expect 2 hours... didn't say it would take you 2 hours... get me?  But it's probably more like an honest hour+.  Due the the placement of the frame and other gubbins, it's a bit fiddley of a job especially if the tech isn't used to working on Monsters - the whole you're paying for their learning aspect of takign it to a shop..

It's a 620 and the mileage is off?  That means the gauge cluster has been replaced.  It's not that uncommon, but it raises some potential issues with the immobilizer.  You want to be absolutely certain that he has the red key and the key card.  You (or the seller) should be able to call a dealer with the VIN number and they'll tell you the history of service on the bike, including what led to the gauge cluster being replaced.
