I hit a huge pothole on my then ~400 mile old 696 which ended up giving me a bent rim. I called the dealer and they said total would cost around 3-400 dollars. They even mentioned that all they do is take the wheel off, and send it out to another shop to have it fixed.
This seems a bit ridiculous to me, so I ended up taking the wheel off myself and taking it to a very very reputable frame straightener in Napa, CA. Some of you may know who Im talking about. He charged me 130 bux which included unmount/mount/balance the tire. Beautiful work.
Will doing this void my warranty? I've never dealt with a situation like this with a new bike or car. I really hope it doesnt. And for a dealer to void it because I have to come to them seems absolutely ridiculous.
Thanks.
I can't see why it would, speaking as someone who works for a dealer* I certainly wouldn't have an issue with it being done by someone else, the only time I could imagine it could cause an issue is if while putting it back on or while removing the damaged wheel they caused damage to the bike and then you try to claim that damage under Warranty.
I quite frankly would have the damage repaired and not tell the Dealer, they don't need to know.
* When I say I work for a dealer, I mean from the respect of, My thoughts are my own, I do not claim to speak for or on behalf of Ducati America, Ducati Australia or the Dealer I work for.
anything directly related to his work will no longer be covered, ie the paint flakes off of the wheel in the area he repaired. otherwise you are fine.
Not sure if you were on the freeway or not, but apparently Caltrans (or the city, if it was on the street) is responsible for damage from potholes. If it was on the freeway, here's a link: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/claimfaq.htm (http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/claimfaq.htm)
