I'm relocating from Chicago to California and need to move a 695 and an 848. I prefer to haul them myself since waiting an unknown amount of time for bike delivery isn't going to work for me. At first I considered renting a U-Haul trailer but it doesn't seem like I'd have enough room for two bikes and it doesn't look like I'd be able to secure them as well as I'd like.
Right now, it looks like my best option is to buy a trailer and straps, hauling them behind my Durango. Can anyone suggest a good trailer? The ability to collapse a bit for storage is a plus, otherwise I'll have to sell it once I get to California. My target price is around $500.
What do I need to do to ensure the bikes don't take damage from flying rocks?
Any information is appreciated.

This is a 3 rail that will carry 1 or 2 bikes. I think the difficulty you will have is finding one in your price range. Might want to look for a used trailer locally.
I couldn't find anything in my price range locally, so I ordered one of those. It's pretty cool as it'll fold up for easier storage and it's pretty cheap compared to other trailers.
Thanks for the info.
I just looked up trailers in the Chicago area on craigslist and it looks like there are some possibilities for you capped at $500.
