Sooo, I was changing the battery on my bike and dropped a screw somewhere into my bike. I've tried kinda shaking it back and forth and I've searched with a flashlight but it's totally missing. My question is, if I say make the beast with two backs it and forget about it, am I going to regret it later?!?
Was there anything open it could have fallen into?
JM
get a magnet and use it to poke around
also....check your chain...... I dropped a bolt once and found it stuck between the links
Potentially yes. If your bike is an air-cooled motor, I've dropped screws and found the majority at the front of the base of the vertical cylinder, or wedged in the fins on the top of the horizontal cylinder.
Both places are likely candidates for where it's 'hiding'. Also, check the rest of the area you were working in...as it may have jumped ship and be lying on the ground nearby.
If I could only get back 1/2 the time I spent looking for bolts that were on the floor instead of on the bike. [roll]
Get a telescoping magnet. Autozone has then usually right near the registar. I'm a fan of magnet on a string for things with bends.
If you were NAKID (the person...not the state of being) it would have burried itself into the back tire instantly. Look there.
I had the gas tank lifted up when I dropped it but there wasn't anything "open" for it to fall into...I've searched the floor, everywhere. That's what I get for trying to hold the gas tank up while screwing the battery in and hold screws at the same time...

of course I did. And you two are nothing alike.
stupid Mondays make the beast with two backsing with all my humor.
did somebody say "nakid IZ" where oh where is the pipemod pic?
[laugh]
When I was working on my monster in the parking lot outside CA-Cycleworks I dropped a screw and it found its way into a tiny nook between the veritcal and horizontal heads. That took me forever to get it out. [roll]

I wish getting it out was my problem...I can't even find the damn thing. It doesn't help that everything in the bike is the exact same color as the screw [roll]
A second pair of eyes will do you wonders...
Well if I don't find it, what are the repurcussions of leaving it wherever it is?

Try that bundle of money you get when you save by switching to Geico ;D It's got big eyes.......
But seriously, if it's not wedged into a moving part (a condition that you've checked carefully for) ride it
I've ridden many with a rogue screw somewhere on it. Never had a problem. Do check very carefully around things that move. It'll bounce or vibrate out somewhere down the road.
JM
if its not in the chain, or in the front sprocket somewhere......and you didnt have the airbox open.....then ride it.
BTW, i always find my missing screws on the little lip on the lower triple. doesnt matter if i was working on the taillight.
thats where they end up.
on the other hand, the 10mm wrench that i left back there one time ended up stuck between the ex box and the case...proving that i have better luck than IZ
may I suggest looking in those places that it could be detrimental, this may make you feel better about saying make the beast with two backs it
Eh,
I'm pretty sure I got some lost screws in there.
And some washers.
Probably at least one socket.
It just adds to the dry clutch rattle.
I have a friend with a few tampons missing in her bike...hasn't seemed to cause any issues yet!!

Is there a back story here worth telling?
Leave the screw where it is and forget about it. You'll find it sometime, and an unexpected screw is always good. ;D
Not really...she has an R1 and sometimes they fall out of the storage space...I don't even think the little box under my seat could fit one!!
r1's make a better douchebag holder than a tampon dispenser ;)

He's blocking the Ducati >:( :P
If you really wanna try to find it, tie a small magnet to a string and drop it from near where you dropped the screw. Investigate the areas where it gets stuck, then knock it loose and check out the next area it gets stuck at until you're find the screw or you're satisfied that it can't be found. If you don't have a small magnet that's about the size of the screw, you could tie a string around another screw and do the same thing. Just make sure you don't let go of the string and loose a 2nd screw. :P
take a compressor crank it up to 120 and start spraying then pray.

Seriously... somebody else who has the same issue. I don't know how it works this way... but it does.

i ride with disposable earrings... usually small silver studs
and i've got tons of those ;)
You might find a screw in your bed.

I was thinking this didn't qualify as "No Moto Content" ... but then I read the thread... and it is less and less moto content as it goes on. [clap]

nice way to loose both of them, the ground trolls will come and swoop it away!
trolls want to be pretty too!
They deserve matching earrings.
I've given up...wherever it is is where it will stay, unless it comes out on it's own!
I've found all kinds of goodies in the crook of the Vee of my 916. Several lost bolts, coolant overflow nipple, a 6 inch bracket, gravel, tar chips. I never noticed they were rattling around in there, thanks to the clutch. You tend to lose and forget about things when the engine is buried in wiring, plumbing, airbox / gas tank, and fairings.
Drop your bike on its side, that is sure to make it come loose.
Then there you go...
[laugh]
I look forward to the "I dented my tank..." thread. ;D
It would only add to the one that's already there [roll] I didn't do it though!
Drop it on the opposite side and it will look like a 696 tank.
