Title: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on May 15, 2008, 03:27:09 AM Okay so after the discussion on "too Oggy knob" or "too not Oggy knob"
I have been wanting to go and do the Stay Upright Advanced course. There are two dates coming up in June that I am looking at right now. Monday June 2 Friday June 6 If anyone wants to come learn I'll know by next week which day I am going to book. cheers Matty... Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: tricolore on May 15, 2008, 03:43:03 AM I was going to suggest something similar, I have done the advanced course before, always sain I would do it again on any new bike I get. I would also seriously consider the cornering and braking [moto].
Only problem is, my bike is not run in yet and the 30min free time at the end of the day is the highlight... would be soooo tempting to just give her a wrist full 8) Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on May 15, 2008, 03:52:16 AM Does that mean you won't be fully run in for the 31st ride then?
In anycase I will pick a date next week. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: tricolore on May 15, 2008, 04:30:51 AM First service will be done so worst of it will be over, in any case it will be a good excuse if you guys burn me ;D
Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: loony888 on May 15, 2008, 11:15:27 PM i wouldn't worry about the running in thing. nikasil bores don't need it, besides, have you seen what they do to them on the dyno at the factory!!! oh my lord! [roll]
i did the braking and cornering course years ago and back then they wouldn't let me do the advanced day till i'd done that first. well worth the time spent. [thumbsup] paul. Like super said flog the guts out of it.it will make for a stronger motor IMO [thumbsup] Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: bigiain on May 16, 2008, 01:29:57 AM i wouldn't worry about the running in thing. nikasil bores don't need it, The bores don't, but the rings and gear teeth might be better off if it's run in a little gently, it's hard to say. I'm the sort of person who aims for _long_ ownership, so I'm prepared to live with babying it for a few days at the start even if there's no conclusive proof either way whether it helps in the long run or not. Mind you, that still meant I was due for my 1000km service 3 days after I rode mine off the showroom floor, and was "fully run in" by the end of the first week... big Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: bigiain on May 16, 2008, 03:24:58 AM had to park it than and wait a week for a spare date to do the service I picked mine up on a Thursday afternoon, and asked to book it in for it's 1000km service while I was there. The service guy flips open his calendar to a page about 2 months away and says "when do you want to bring it in", I say "how about Monday?"... Ended up not being able to have them do it until the Tuesday, so I had to ride my Spada to work on the Monday 'cause I'd already done ~1200km by Sunday afternoon... But I _know_ people think I'm weird... (I suspect I'll end up being a Moto Guzzi owner one day...) big Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Dockstrada on May 19, 2008, 12:23:12 AM Did one of those courses years back it really dose help.
All I can say is try not to focus on the speed focus on your posture and lines just be loose the speed will come in time. A lot of guys are going off and doing super bike schools with no intentions to do track days. Wrong The only thing they will teach you there are track lines totally different to street lines and also dangerous on the road. The stay upright class is great you will learn some things that will shock you regarding braking distances mid corner braking and how it can help and line of vision. Plus you will have a stack of fun [thumbsup] Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Big T on May 19, 2008, 01:41:49 AM Hey Matty could you PM me the details for the 6th June. I actually have the day off and "might" get a leave pass from the boss..... [thumbsup]
Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Betty on May 19, 2008, 01:45:44 AM Could be interested for the Friday although logistics could be an issue (assuming I can get the time off work).
Would you be intending to do the theory session? Is there anything covered there that won't be covered again on the day? I'm asking because it would make it a very late night for me before a very full day on the Friday. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on May 19, 2008, 01:50:56 AM I most likely would do the theory session however it is only an option it is not necessary to do it.
I am sure they would give some sort of catch up briefing on the morning when people arrive. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Dockstrada on May 19, 2008, 01:58:17 AM So which is the one you guys are doing The Advanced I Skills Development Course or
Advanced II Cornering & Braking Course??? Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on May 19, 2008, 02:00:58 AM Advanced skills I
I think you have to do that before they let you do # II Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Dockstrada on May 19, 2008, 02:03:48 AM Yep When you guys finish Skill 1 Il join you for Skills 2 need a bit of a nip and tuck ;D
Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: tricolore on May 19, 2008, 03:00:00 AM The theory is pretty good though if you got your bike licence within the last couple of years its much the same stuff they go over in that course. If you have had your licence for a long time it would be of benefit as it alerts you to the old mis-conceptions developed by "experienced" riders. Would recommend it.
The Advanced I course is very infomative and i would suggest you will learn how to get more from your ride. IMO. Most of all its heaps of fun [moto]. I will sit this one out, I look to have finally convinced my best mate to get a road bike and have committed to doing the same course with him ( if he ever decides on a bike). Steve. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: craigo on May 19, 2008, 05:24:55 AM I've been wanting to do this for ages, so I'm booked for Fri 6th.

Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: brimo on May 31, 2008, 04:26:06 PM Just did the Advanced 1 course yesterday, not a big turnout (12) as the weather here's been pretty crap. But the god's smiled on us yesterday and we got good weather.
Learned heaps, gained a lot of my old confidence back, highly recommended. There was a fair cross section of experience there and the instructors took it all in to account. Great to have someone follow you around and critique you at the end. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on May 31, 2008, 05:06:48 PM Excellent.

There is a lot of things I need to work on (and a couple of mods may be needed). But the big one the instructors kept drumming into me was that I don't use the brakes enough. Nice photos as usual Matty ... and that monstrous 620 of yours was all over that 1098. As for Jukie .... well for someone who started the day saying she doesn't like corners, it could be a while before that smile subsides. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on June 06, 2008, 04:14:58 AM What did I learn?
1. to keep pressure on the front brake while blipping on down shifts. 2. just how amazing the front brakes are and how they can stop you REAL quick without locking. 3. looking further through corners. 4. most important for me moving my weight off the bike, so I lean but the bike stay more upright in cornering. 5. low speed maneuvering, didn't think my Monster could steer that well going slow so. Highly recommended for anyone who has been riding for any length of time. $385 very well spent. Go do it..... Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: BretMorris on June 06, 2008, 01:29:49 PM Looks like everyone had a great time and learnt something that will make them better and safer riders on the road. All good.
I am going to see if and when there might be a similar type of training in South Australia. Would be great to get a couple of local Monster riders together like the Sydney crew to make a day of it. I am envious with the amount of resources and fellow Ducati Monster owners that get together in Sydney and enjoy a common passion. It is good to be able to "sort of" join in over the internet. Thanks Mattyvas for his photos and videos that he gets done so quickly and shares... Gee you got to love the internet. Cheers Bret Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Betty on June 06, 2008, 02:31:42 PM Bret, you should have a few down your way for the Tourismo I believe.
As for the instructor with the Monster: - on sign-in he asked why so many monsters - my reply was 'the real question is why aren't you on ducatimonsterworldwide.org' - and it was apparent from the completely stock bike he had Another guy asked why so many monsters and I told him about the forum. He said I don't s'pose there is a Hyosung forum - but he was going to have a look anyway. So even outsiders see the value in this community. Another of the instructors said (from a distance) 'geez that gsxr looks good' then spent the next five minutes ogling the monsters in silent amazement. Gotta love our bikes! I had a great day on Friday, I have a lot to practice. How good is it when a crowd of monsters turn out and look as good as they do :). Great photo's Matty, and thanks for starting the experience off. Regards Don Elder Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Super T.I.B on June 07, 2008, 04:10:10 PM Do you remember the name of the instructor?
Because if it's the same bloke who does the L and P's at Clyde, he was all over mine when I did my licence, another one of the instructors even pointed to my bike and said don't be surprised if my bike is missing by the end of the day. [laugh] Great bunch of blokes, they really know what they are talking about. ;) Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on June 07, 2008, 04:28:13 PM We had
Wayne Wayne Terry Paul the Monster owner. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Super T.I.B on June 07, 2008, 04:54:34 PM We had Wayne Wayne Terry Paul the Monster owner. He gave me great feed back and encouragement all day. No, no really he's a great bloke. Happy to have him there for us to learn from. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Betty on June 08, 2008, 04:22:52 PM Yeah he was very helpful - he was the one who told me I was not revving enough on the downshifts. In fact he got me to practice it a few times and then he demonstarted further (on my bike) another or 6 or 7 times to make sure I could tell the difference

Big T is going to buy it then share it between us, we can just copy it and pass it on. They got $385 out of each of us, they don't need another $30 each again. Will let everyone know when it is on the way. cheers Matty... Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Betty on June 09, 2008, 11:23:46 PM Well done guys. I was gonna suggest we all throw in $5 bucks each on the day but it all ended pretty quickly.
Sounds like we owe you a couple of pots of tea Trev. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: Big T on June 11, 2008, 05:37:05 AM The pics are up.........
I have the info to order the DVD so will do so..... Stay tuned... http://www.stayupright.com.au/images/gallery_advanced_060608/gallery_default.htm Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: craigo on June 11, 2008, 06:03:20 AM Those photos are pretty sweet. I had an awesome day. Traffic is well boring now.
I would really like to do the Stayupright advance cornering and braking course before Oran shuts down. Not sure when it will get shut, but it can't have long to live. Alternatively I also spotted this Oran Park Track Days for ~$145 (http://www.circuitbreakers.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=28) [moto] I'm up for track days (in d- class). 25 minute runs would be awesome. Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on June 11, 2008, 04:31:02 PM Well don't we all look very professional......
Hanging off the sides of bikes, looking into and past corners....... Managed to get this photo because it opened in window instead of the little pop up frame. If you want to borrow a specific image in a larger format, just hover over it and the image name will appear (eg dargle101) Then manually mangle the image name into this path: http://www.stayupright.com.au/images/gallery_advanced_060608/photos/[your image name here].jpg Example: http://www.stayupright.com.au/images/gallery_advanced_060608/photos/dargle101.jpg Title: Re: A little bit of training then...... Post by: mattyvas on June 11, 2008, 07:36:11 PM Hey Craigo,
that's great, I can't remember if the Boss man said he'd have a CD of everything he shot of each person for $30 or what. Might email them to find out what the story is. I know Big T is going to get the other CD of that gallery and share the hi res images. But it's good to have these smaller ones just for the memories. And you're right it seemed like we were much closer the track than the photos show. Title: Re: A little bit of training then......
