Title: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K-UPDATED MORE PICS ADDED!!! Post by: Monstermash on March 17, 2009, 07:42:27 PM Well after asking for Photosho help to get an idea of what it would look like I finally took the plunge and removed the swingarm to paint it.
It wasn't too much of a PITA and only took a few hours with beer. Here's a pic of the bike with it removed. (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/Painted%20Swingarm/Swingarmremoved.jpg) And here's a few of the freshly painted swingarm ready to be reinstalled. (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/Painted%20Swingarm/Swingarmpainted.jpg) (http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff176/MonstermashS2R/Painted%20Swingarm/Swingarmpainted2.jpg) I should have some time later this week to put Humpty back together again. More pic to follow of the completed project! [thumbsup] Anyone want to come by and help out? I plan on PCing mine once spring break comes around. It's called Hot Rod Black and it looks much better in person. It has a catalyst in it so it's very hard paint too so it should be durable. I've always liked your bike after it was featured on TOB. [thumbsup] Keep us updated. KP Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K Post by: Takster on March 17, 2009, 09:05:46 PM Looks great!
but... am I the only one wondering what you used a jigsaw for? Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K Post by: Monstermash on March 18, 2009, 06:01:27 AM Looks great! but... am I the only one wondering what you used a jigsaw for? Lol. Nothing on the bike. I replaced the floor in my bathroom this past weekend and I was cutting notches in the subfloor for the toilet plumbing. The jigsaw just happened to get left there when I brought it in from the garage. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K Post by: Takster on March 18, 2009, 06:17:01 AM Lol. Nothing on the bike. I have pulled my swingarm so many times that I can get it off in about 15 mins now. What did you use to get the piviot axle out?It wasn't too much of a PITA and only took a few hours with beer. I don't know much, but I follow directions very well. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K Post by: Monstermash on March 19, 2009, 09:06:49 AM I've got some free time on saturday if you want a hand... I don't know much, but I follow directions very well. Thanks Tak but I've just about got it back together. It should be done when I get a spare 20 mins or so. I have pulled my swingarm so many times that I can get it off in about 15 mins now. What did you use to get the piviot axle out? You mean the 6mm retaining screw or the actual pivot? I needed an impact gun to get the 6mm retaining screw out and after that I just tapped lightly on one side with a rubber mallet. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K Post by: ducrider45 on March 19, 2009, 11:18:07 AM I was talking about the pivot. Mine was hell getting it to move. I started with a rubber mallet and ended up using a block of wood and a small sledge.

Can wait to get mine back from powdercoating and back on the bike. Amazing how much better the overall bike looks with a color frame matched swingarm.. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K-UPDATED MORE PICS ADDED!!! Post by: needtorque on March 19, 2009, 04:07:31 PM Anyone got pics of a blue one? On the bike. I am wondering how mine would look matched. I can almost picture it and I think it would be nice.

I was considering powdercoating mine but if you tell me how you went about doing it so nicely I may change my mind :) Wasn't all that hard after you remove the swingarm. Just make sure you tape up all the important things like threads, etc. I actually had it sand blasted to remove any crap that was on it after I cleaned it. Also make sure you use an epoxy primer. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K-UPDATED MORE PICS ADDED!!! Post by: Airborne on March 19, 2009, 08:20:34 PM What were the actual products you used? I.e the paint the primer etc.

Thats the way the bike should have come from the factory. Title: Re: Painted my swingarm on my S2R1K-UPDATED MORE PICS ADDED!!! Post by: Monstermash on March 20, 2009, 05:35:42 PM Thanks, I think I'm going to try it. Any tips/advice I should know prior? Make sure you have a parts catalog handy and print out any pages which show the parts you will be working with so you have it for reference. Once you have the swingarm off be sure you clean it well. I actually had it sandblasted just to be sure. The epoxy primer is key as well. Do NOT use regular primer if you want the paint to say on longer than your first ride. Make sure you mask off all the threaded holes. To make it easy just tape off the heads of the bolts that go in the holes and then thread them into the holes. The Hot Rod black should be baked to cure it after it's been painted. Other than that I can't think of anything additional. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a pm. |
