Title: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: hypurone on May 15, 2008, 06:43:07 AM Gonna be in the Canyon Lake area visiting relatives. gonna have 2 days to go and ride. I have a couple of routes planned out. Looking for anyone that knows the current condition of the Ortega Hwy. I hear there is contruction going there? Was gonna ride it as part of a loop on Tues and end up out in the Julian area. Been out that way on my way to Ocatillo for some quad riding and the roads were awesome.
Gonna be heading up to Big Bear as well on Thurs. Anyone wanna play hooky? Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... I'd join you, but it looks like I'm going to Tucson for the week :P Ortega is still a mess, at least it was a couple weeks ago... If you're going to the Julian Area, check out Mesa Grande road for a change of pace. Its not tight twisties, but its fast, smooth, and just a beatiful place. It runs between the 76 (near Lake Henshaw) to the 79 (just north of Julian). Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... We're as vocal as our participants. :-\ We've been a little down on OC/SD participants since Tom left, BD became the Locaiton/Coffee-Shop Poseur [leo], Rideon had his accident, and Todd/DucDude shipped out (I think). I think Eileen is down there too, but she doesn't post up in local much. Personally, I was always just trying to be helpful by sending people to what I thought were more relevant/active sites for those regions. [thumbsup] OC/SD folks are always welcome at our events, track outings, and on this board, but since the regulars are pretty much on the westside I can't promise that we'll have much valuable input on those regions. ??? Can I get thru to the coast? Is it as bad as being dirt? Ya gotta remember, I'm NorCal, the roads up here suck!! You can get to the coast, but its not likely to be a real fun ride. The road is one lane in places. They stop all the traffic for 15 or 20 minutes at a time, and then let a parade of traffic through. Forget about riding aggressively, they are just looking to give out tickets in a construction zone. [leo] At least this is how it works on weekends, don't know what you'll run into midweek.... check to make sure that its not closed at particular times. Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... I'm down in SoCal now and saw a sign stating it was closed but didn't catch the times. My Mother-in-law said it was at night. We'll see, if it gets to be a drag, I can always turn around and go elsewhere! Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: Bad Dog on May 18, 2008, 06:54:06 PM ??? Where exactly do iIcatch this Mesa Grande Road and Mt Palomar? Are they off the 76? Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: Bad Dog on May 19, 2008, 03:29:12 PM That is exactly my destination! I prefer to take 15 South, exit 79, head East (under freeway) and turn right on Pechanga.......turn another quick right on Rainbow and take that wonderful road to the small town of Pala. When you come into Pala (T intersection at the end of Rainbow) turn left, go a few blocks and turn left onto 76. Take 76 to Mt. Palomar turn-off (S7), on your left. After you experience the front and back sides of Mt. Palomar, head South to Lake Henshaw...........Mesa Grande is SouthWest of the Lake. Have fun ! Mapquest 'Pala, CA' and you'll get the area on your monitor. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Pala+ca/ ;) Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Or you can just head over to popKiller in J-Town on 2nd (across from pinkberry) and pick one up in person. Cool store. Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: Ivan on May 19, 2008, 08:50:36 PM To add to what BadDog said... zoom in on the map right at the southern tip of Lake Henshaw. Zoom some more. Take one of the Loop Roads south from 76, and that will take you to Mesa Grande Rd. Its a nice way to get to Julian from Palomar. Be careful on Palomar.
Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: hypurone on May 21, 2008, 07:34:53 AM Thanks all! It was a great ride yesterday! I had a blast on Ortega, 5 was boring but good views, first part of 76 was bleh. Though I had a lot of good stoplight drag races. [evil] I loved Palomar and the road over to Lake Henshaw! Mesa Grande was an absolute hoot and the run out to and through Julian. I blasted back up thru Warner Springs (silly fast) and caught a road that a local in Julian suggested called Sage Road. OMG, middle of nowhere and this road is in better shape that the most of the roads back home! I hope my run up to Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead on Thurs is as good. WOO HOO! [moto]
Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: Bad Dog on May 21, 2008, 08:06:51 AM I was going to mention Sage Rd. I love that road.... Just did not want to overload your ride out there, but I see you managed well. Great ! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area... Post by: panman on May 21, 2008, 05:50:58 PM what route are you taking up to big bear? 38 through redlands is the best for me. it's a little longer than the frontside but more funn. a thursday won't be too trafficky.
you can get clicking right along past redlands till you get to forest falls. watch that hairpin turn at forest falls. the downcoming traffic can often drift. then it's pretty nice twisties, only a few dirty spots and an occasional large rock. once you get past the north fork campground and start to climb, it's all 80+ sweepers steady on until onyx summit. the downgrade after onyx summit is fun too, but remember leo likes to hang out at one or more of the turnouts to get momentum riders. especially 7 miles past the summit just past the first neighborhood you see on the left. so i'd advise a more casual decline. oh yea, there seems to be a little more of a push for leo to lean on motorcycle 'safety' i just spoke to my wife who drove down here today and she says the road is clean. have a funnn ride [beer] Title: Re: Gonna Be in the area...
