Anyone change the oil in their 696 yet? What materials do you need to pick up. I know there's the oil filter(duh!) and the oil(double duh!), but are there some crush washers or screens I need to replace too?
And also, I was wondering what oil is best for Ducati 2 valvers with a wet clutch. I read the owners manual and it says use only Shell Advance Ultra 4, but I can't seem to find that ANYWHERE. So what are some suitable substitutes that meet or exceed that Shell Advance Ultra 4?
Thanks!
One of our members, Zarn02, went to a lot of work and summarized a lot of oil discussions here:

It takes awhile to read through it but I think it's worth it and I think it answers your question and much more.
It's a shame the post did not become a sticky, but the info came from another forum so there may have been some good reasons why it didn't.
edited to clean up link....dp
You can use pretty much any oil that specifies it is for wet clutch bikes. If you don't want to spend a lot, I know a few people who put Honda branded oil in their wet clutch bikes.
When I had a wet clutch bike I used Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil; they even have a VTwin variant, no idea what that means. Then I switched to Mobil 1 10w-30 (their car oil) since it was half the price. I never had clutch slippage but I've heard stories that people have.
Still other people have used Rotella (diesel spec) oil. No idea why....
I think the key here is, do your oil change. Do it regularly...
As for crush washers, if your 696 is like any other a/c monsters, you'll need a crush washer at the drain plug, and one at the oil screen. Ask your local dealer, they should stock them.
Hi,
anyone know how much oil I need to pick up to do an oil change on the 696? 3 quarts enough?
Thanks.
In the manual it states 3.1L for sump and filter. That's roughly 3.3 US Quarts. I'd get four and use it as a top off.
My M696 gets 3.1 litres of Motul 7100 fully synthetic 10w40, a new oil filter, new crush-washers and it's screen filter cleaned every 4000kms. I hope its grateful.... ;)
3 quarts of whatever oil you like, flip the crush washers over and reuse 3-4 times. PerForm filter.

Hey Man,
Where I am, Shell Advance is only available at the Ducati dealer's shop, at $24.00/liter :o :o :o, being trying to find out who here has something else[importing oil is very expensive, must pay $400.00 as 'special fee'..no matter how much]. [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang]
Upon gong thru some of the vendors pages, I've seen lots of oil advertised. One local vendor has BelRay 10W50 Synthetic[mentioned by one vendor] [thumbsup] [thumbsup] 8)...gonna try it next oil change, that will include, new filter, crush washer, screen cleaning and 4L of the said oil. If not, well, buy a container full of either Motorex 10W40, Motul 7100... :-\ :-\ just saying, ain;t gonna pay $400.00 for just two cases of oil you know?
Ducati works with Shell, seen any MotoGP/WSB lately? So that's why they say 'USE ONLY SHELL ADVANCE ULTRA 4' and to my knowledge, there're two types, Semi-Synth and Full Synth. ??? ??? ???
I've used dino and synthetic auto oil in most brands of wet clutches and yet to have one slip. Walmart.
