Title: FIM chip install.... still a few probs..
Post by: lawbreaker on March 21, 2009, 09:51:55 AM
So I installed an Ultimaps/FIM UM-171 chip in my 996 SPS. It cured the stalling issue I had sometimes when I blip the throttle quickly. I have ,however, noticed a but of a flat spot and a tad of surging when she's running between 4200-6k RPM's. She even sounds different- like rolling completely off the throttle, or not being fed fuel. I'm not sure if I need a dyno tune now or if I still have a low-mid range issue to figure out.Any help would be appreciated.

BTW when I flog on her , she runs GREAT..... Maybe I shouldnt ride her on the street?

any ideas?

is it customary to dynotune a bike when you change eproms?

I'm thinking (hoping) that Brad Black may have some insight into this.

There's lots of wacky stuff that went on with 996's and their Eproms:
http://www.bikeboy.org/performance.html (http://www.bikeboy.org/performance.html)
Reports 14 - 16.

Your bike may be set up differently as far as exhaust or other parts go, compared to the bike that was used to make that UM-171.
Or the cam timing may be different.

Is the UM-171 a single injector chip?

If so you disconnected one injector on each TB?

Its a twin injector chip

hmmmmm....

I thought Duane had figured out that the twin injectors was the issue with driveability and all the chips were single injector.

Shows you what thought will get you. ;)

According to FIM's website the UM 171 is for a 97-98 916 SPS

scroll down

Even though they are pretty much belly up you might try giving them a call.

Did you do a TB synch and adjust the idle trim?

FIM doesn't have a pre-programmed EPROM for the 996 SPS so you'll need some dyno time to sort it. As was mentioned above, your chip is set-up for a 916SPS. Alternatively, you could try the Ducati Performance 996SPS-specific 08054/26 (50mm) or 08054/24 (52mm exhaust.)

The 996SPS uses the Weber-Marelli P8 computer but the 996 uses the 1.6M  so the SPS isn't affected by the 996 problem with dual injectors.

For those unfamiliar with the 996 single injector conversion here's some background:

All 996's came with two injectors per cylinder. Before the 996 model, only the SP and SPS bikes had dual injectors. However, those earlier bikes use the larger P8 computer which is capable of firing the injectors sequentially, meaning that the second injector sprays only at the higher engine speeds.

The 996, on the other hand, is controlled by the smaller 1.6M computer which is incapable of firing the injectors sequentially. So the engine does not run well with both injectors firing at the same time, especially at low rpms where spray durations get too short to get good spray patterns. The fuel dribbles out.

According to FIM, dual injectors are not needed unless you're making more than 120HP, and so they have developed a single injector chip for the 996.

This is a quote from FIM's previous site:

"We have two UltiMaps for the 996 Biposto '99/2000 model. There have been many problems with these models spitting on low throttle or cruise at low speeds. We have finally made a chip which cures the problem (type UM222), but requires that one injector be disconnected from each cylinder. This is because the 996 has two injectors hard-wired in the harness and we can't switch one off like we can with the 996SPS or early 888 computers. The benefit is that the single injector spits more cleanly at low durations than two injectors do ( because they have only half the time each) and idle and low throttle repsonse is heaps better. We remapped a 996 with this mod and the difference is incredible. We do sell a twin injector verison of the same chip (type UM221), but in most cases the UM222 works better, and is worth the effort."

According to Brad Black:

The UM222 single injector EPROM cures the 996 misfire that occurs when you roll the throttle open at 3,500 rpm. The UM222 is only for models fitted with strada cams, not models having SPS etc. cams. Typically it happens when you get it to 3,500 rpm.  Duh duh duh duh vroom.  Not 3,000 rpm. Not 4,000 rpm.

THIS IS THE ONLY MISFIRE THE UM222 SINGLE INJECTOR EPROM CURES OR IS INTENDED TO CURE.

The UltiMap UM232 is for a 996S, the euro spec one with sps cams.

I can only say the UM-222 works great in my 996.

I haven't done that, so I'll start there and see what happens next....

Much thanks [beer]

Why the sigh?

....and where in Socal can I gonna get this done.....?

Dealer? ( I kinda try to stay away from dealers unless I have to

 ;)

Not absolutely sure if the trim on your ECU is a screw or electronic (I'm thinking electronic), I've got to look that up to be sure.
Setting TPS and syncing can be done easily.

I think Shazaam's sigh was from his thought that the problem lies elsewhere.
He could be right.

IMO, the trim, TPS and sync need to be done as a first step of trying to eliminate a fueling issue.

Need some definition of the differences between 916SPS and 996SPS motors to find out where that chip might be hurting things.

Um........

So..........

Nick, when are 'ya available to do some tinkering on the ole 996 ?

I'm bringing beer this time [beer]

916SPS and 996SPS are the same bike.  The idle trimmer (on the ecu) is disabled on the UM171.

That's what I thought.

Does that mean no electronic trim via DDS or other diagnostic hookup, or that the potentiometer trim is disabled, or?

the trimmer on the p8 is a screw device on the ecu body.  the fim eprom disables it at software level.  i assume it's a 16 number map somewhere in the software that instead of being a sliding scale from say 60 to a0 is set to all 80.  that's what it is in the aprilia maps anyway.
