Title: Registering a bike with Arlington county?
Post by: tuanogus on March 21, 2009, 01:47:09 PM
Newb question... I got a letter from Arlington reminding me that I have to register my bike (so they can tax me in October). For $24.00 they're going to send me a decal ( [roll]). With autos you stick the decal next to the inspection sticker. But what about motorcycles? And should I assume the county knows that my new "vehicle" is a motorcycle? And that the decal for autos won't work because I don't have a windshield?

Yeah, Arl sends a different sticker for bikes.  It's smaller and the printing is on the opposite side from the sticky stuff, as opposed to the window stickers for the cars.

I've got mine stuck to the inside facing of the bit of plate metal I have my inspection sticker on.  Said plate is fastened to the bike via one of the big rear set bolts (dual sided swing arm style rear sets)

Thanks, yuu. I probably should have just sent you a PM (duh). Maybe this will help some other/future Arlington resident, though.

I stopped "buying" the stickers - I just do registation.  But I used to stick it on the fork next to the inspection sticker.  Of course, I'm going to stop doing inspections too.  Nothing seems to happen when the inspection expires.

$675 in car taxes for a '04 Jeep & 2 bikes is quite enough thanks.  [insert explitives here]

The thing is fugly and with most of the other counties not issuing stickers anymore I would not put it on the bike, maybe under the seat in the document holder. Only LEO that can write you a ticket for not having it displayed is Arlington county, first they would have to stop you, see that you bike is registered in Arlington County, remember to look for the sticker........ Just MHO - Gene

Sticker showed up. Decided to keep it under the seat until I get disciplined.

Hopefully nothing ever.  I paid my tax and sticker fee for 08-09 but lost the sticker some place before it made it to the bike...  I'm not worried so much about the sticker - it was just being on the hook to *the man* for some taxes that I didn't wan't to have looming.

Well here's something for you to consider RE arlington.  I live in a complex w/ apartments and small townhouses where all the parking is lot parking.  Walking my dog this AM I saw someones SUV with a big day-glo orange sticker smacked right on the windshield, some other paper stuffed under the wiper - and no plates.  I took a peak at the sticker and it said all that was due to not paying some fee or tax to the county.  The SUV had a tax sticker, but I know those arrive regardless of paying the bill, so I can't hazard a guess as to what they didn't pay.  But the county let 'em know they were not amused...

Interesting, yuu. Was that SUV a big black GMC by chance? We had one of those parked on the street in my neighborhood until recently. Same deal - lots of tickets; some orange and some white. This one had plates, though, and a couple of flat tires.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Big black Chevy, I think.  Might have been a GM though... Wasn't focused on that.  This didn't have a pile of tickets like you see some times.  Just that big orange sticker and what I presume was are more specific letter under the wiper.  It's my assumption that arlington took the plates - not that the vehicle had no plates prior.  My community and the other ones near by can be pretty rough on parking.  In my by laws you can't park if the vehicle as no tags etc.

- The big orange sticker said "Do Not Move This Vehicle"  -  that's why I think the Co took the plates.  You're not going to get far in Arl w/o plates and not have a chat w/ a member of the ACPD or ACSD

Oh man, I bet it's the same one. If it is, the plates are/were Massachusetts. I could tell just by looking at it, though. It moved around our neighborhood a few times over the past few years and just recently disappeared. I figured the county towed it away.

This is down in Shirlington.. and it's a pretty new truck.  Not sure, but I don't think it's more than a couple years old. But I'll check on the make/model on my afternoon stroll.

*post Stroll Edit

It's a GMC Envoy - current body style - so it can't be too old.

I'd be surprised if it was.  Car theft.. hell any crime really isn't the MO in my immediate area.  Worst we had was a spurt of auto smash and grab thefts - since epople go too complacent and would leave expensive stuff out in plain sight on their car seats.  It's probably someone who didn't pay the man.

Oh there was the dude who got tossed from Bungalow Billiards and tries to set it on fire... but that's a different tale.

I have been accused of having a vivid imagination. But maybe that's because they're watching me. You know. "Them"
