Question: You don't have any money...you own a 2005 Monster S2R 800 with 6000 miles on it and the timing belt has not been replaced.  What do you do?
Option 1: Ride it and take care of it next year. votes: 3
Option 2: Professionally service it and put it on the credit card hoping for the best. votes: 8
Option 3: Try to change it myself even though I don't have a mechanical background. votes: 14
Option 4: Don't worry about the timing belt for another two years...it'll last. votes: 2
Title: Timing Belt Anyone???

I need some advice on this timing belt issue.  I can't really afford to put money into the bike but I don't want to take any stupid risks.  Do I get the timing belt replaced on an 05 Monster S2R 800 with 6000 miles?  I live in MA.  The dealership said it would cost $120 for the belts and $160 for the labor.

You forgot the option of:

5.) Get some of the NEMHA crew to help out, since the belts take about 30 minutes on a slow day on your bike

;D

If the belts are original they are almost 4 years old. I have run belts that long, but wouldn't go any longer.

If you have the tools, you could get help through the use of pics posted up and people could tell you if things look right.

Also there are some videos posted on the web. Chris Kelley has one on ducati-tech.

I'm going to move this to tech...you'll get better answers there.

what about your 6000 mile service?
shouldn't belts be changed as a part of the 6k?
if you need a 6k service done, i would definitely say don't ride it all year...
my belts are exactly as old as yours, i'm going to ride until my 6k is due (june 3rd it's scheduled).

Normally belts are a 12k service item.  But as noted before it's 2 years.. or 12k - whichever comes 1st.

If he did take it in for a 6k they might as well do the belts as well at the same time - since you aught to take the belts off so you can spin the cams by hand to check for binding.
