Title: Off the beaten path movie thread
Post by: the_Journeyman on March 23, 2009, 09:49:57 AM
Looking at the movies C1 and I have watched recently, I'd like to share & let others share about odd-ball movies. We're talking about just flat out unusual, weird or strange movies. Think things like Rocky Horror Picture Show. It doesn't matter if they're sci-fi, horror, or whatever genre they fit in. I'll share C1 and my recent watches

Streets of Fire
1984 -Odd movie with a bit of a plot. Jim Steinman had a hand in it, as he did some of the the music. The four-wheeled vehicles are all from toe 40's and 50's while all the motorcycles appear to be kick-start Harleys, while all the music is from the 80's. Guy goes with help from a couple others after his ex girlfriend is captured by a motoryccle gang.

Notable Actors - Rick Moranis, Diane Lane

Fire Inc was a short-lived band that arose with the music from the movie.

----------

Repo - The Genetic Opera
2008 - Musicalesque movie. Civilization is in shambles, and people and dying right and left from major organ failures. A large company begins to grow and harvest organs from the dead. There's a "repoman" that's responsible for repo'ing organs if people miss their payment. . A bit of a plot involving the repoman's daughter, as well as the head of the organ company and the blind singer "owned" by the organ company.

Notable Actors - Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman

-----------
Killer Clowns from Outer Space
1988 - Just flat out weird. Not sure there's even a plot. Think people wrapped into cotton candy coccoons, hung up to "age" so the alien clowns can drink them. Popcorn shooting guns, spaceship that turns into a big top tent when it lands, it's just odd.

Notable actors - None
-----------

Add your favorite oddities or one that was so bizarre you can't get it out of your head.  No porn.

Rivers Edge 1986. Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper.

Motorcycle Diaries. Not too quirky but visually beautiful and historically insightful.

Touch of Evil. Charlton Heston, Orson Welles. Great lighting

They keep popping into my head

Liquid Sky, another cult classic by Slava Tsukerman. Get ready for strange NYC SiFi androgyny.

The Station Agent. Haven't seen it yet but the description on Netflix got me interested.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, 1983. David Bowie. Can't quite remember it but I think it made a dent.

Bagdad Cafe'. One of those films that makes you remember Jack Palace.

Think things like Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Might not be your cup of tea if you're at all a homophobe, awesome soundtrack. Imagine a cross between 'Rocky Horror' and 'This Is Spinal Tap' and you're getting close.

And, yes, Killer Klowns is a great movie - I own it on DVD.  :)

Maybe too mainstream for this thread . . .  "The long kiss goodnight" Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson
Geena Davis as an amnesiac hit(wo)man.

Hey maybe someone here can come up with the title to this movie I can't get out of my head. It was a post-nuclear- apocolypse film about a young boy and a telepathic or talking dog. Maybe from the '70s.
Any idea?

This could become a classic thread.

"Motel Hell" Campy horror
1980
Noteables:
Rory Calhoun
Elaine Joyce
Wolfman Jack
John Ratzenberger

"It takes all kinds of critters to make farmer Vincent's fritters."

"Frankenhooker" Campy horror

Notables: Louise Lasser

A med student accidently kills his GF in a lawn mower accident. Saves her head in a freezer and goes to get body parts from hookers to remake his GF. He invents "Super Crack" that the hookers smoke and then explode...Many exploding hooker scenes...You can't get any better than that.

More serious (my fav movie of all time BTW):
"Drugstore Cowboy" 1989

Notables:
Matt Dillon
James Remar
James LeGros
Heather Graham
Kelly Lynch
William S. Burroughs

Based on a true story, a small gang of drug addicts rip-off drugstores to satisfy their habit. One tries to "clean up his hand." Directed by Gus Van Sant

Brotherhood of the Wolf (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0237534/). French, with English subtitles. Best martial arts flick you'll see this year.

Attack the Gas Station (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0262246/). A group of Korean misfits decide to rob the same gas station for the second night in a row. This time, they start to (after taking hostages) run the business. In doing so, the set the stage for each of them to realize their inner-most dreams. Sounds ghey, but is TOTALLY awesome.

The Score (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0227445/). Master thief Robert De Nero teams up with mentally-handicapped (in the movie) Ed Norton and criminal fixer Marlon Brando. Watch it and remember why you never, ever, EVER, want to cross De Niro. As if you needed a reason. Also contains the greatest safe-crack in history.

Boondock Saints (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0144117/). Because you've always wanted to be a vigilante. Don't lie.

True Romance (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0108399/). Quentin Tarantino's take on a "Romance." Stars everyone famous, from James Gandolfini to Christopher Walken to Christian Slater to Brad Pitt. And no, I'm not exaggerating.

I love weird, oddball movies.

Also, anyone who hasn't should watch Ravenous (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0129332/) for a real taste of cannibalism.  [evil]

I really liked Alex Cox's film Repo Man, so I checked out his lesser known film Walker. It's about William Walker - an American ex-pat filibusterer who went to Nicaragua, led a coup and made himself president only to turn it into a slave republic (before the Civil War). It's a really interesting film because it's intentionally anachronistic (and OVERTLY political).

Features: Ed Harris, Joe Strummer (minor role). Score by Joe Strummer.

If you don't mind animated stuff, check out Perfect Blue. It's a Japanese film about a pop singer who tries to change her image and be taken seriously. Her fanbase object. It's bloody and confusing as the main character struggles to keep her sanity while those close to her are horrifically murdered.

Features: it's a cartoon

If you want a brainless Japanese zombie flick, rent Wild Zero. The garage rock band Guitar Wolf star in this convoluted plotline featuring zombies, transexuals, UFOs, arms smugglers, television reporters, MOTORCYCLES and lots of rock and roll.

The American DVD has a "Drinking game" extra where a beer will flash on the screen every time Guitar Wolf says Rock and Roll.

If I have some time, I'll throw up a list of solid indie horror and drive-in exploitation flicks that are available on netflix and worth seeing.

The first and fourth Toxic Avenger movies are "good" (the second and third are a disaster and not necessary to watch the fourth). If you like Troma movies, you probably have already seen Terror Firmer and Tromeo and Juliet. Both are lots of fun, but probably not if you're not into typical troma fare.

Anyone who likes south park and hasn't' seen Cannibal! The Musical needs to remedy that right away. It was Trey Parker's student film before he dropped out of college and became a millionaire. It's a 50s style musical about the only man in US history convicted of cannibalism - Alfred Packer. South Park humor abounds, but the songs are really catchy. The DVD commentary track might be even funnier than the film, so it's worth two viewings for that.
Features: those two guys who make south park, that little guy who's in their other movies, a cameo by avant-film GOD Stan Brakhage.

A Terry Gilliam film fest would fit within this thread (most of his work, anyway). I'd highly recommend Time Bandits (a group of dwarves are supposed to fix the holes in the space time continuum, but they steal God's map of the holes and use it to rob historical persons). Sean Connery is in it. My favorite Gilliam film is Brazil. A typo + an unforgiving bureaucracy combine to ruin the lives of several people caught in a dystopic future. Robert Di Nero plays the part of a crusading HVAC repairman operating off the grid, making him public enemy #1. As with (almost) all of Gilliam's work, the visuals are dark, inspired and odd.

For light (and nearly family fare) viewing, dig out the 80s classic UHF. Weird Al Yankovic's "masterpiece" centers on his quasi-inheritance of a crappy tv station his uncle does not want and his efforts to reinvent the programming while taking on the local network competition. The plot is hokey, the jokes are hokier and that makes it all the better. Michael Richards (pre-Kramer) plays Stanley Spidowski, a soft-headed janitor turned children's tv show host. Emo Philips has a cameo as a local wood shop teacher. Kevin McCarthy (invasion of the body snatchers) is the easy to hate villain working to derail Al's station.

Run Ronnie Run has it's moments. It's a Mr Show sketch turned feature film. David Cross and Bob Odenkirk both have said it's a piece of crap and should be avoided. They had to make too many compromises. It's still a fun flick, but I could only imagine how good it would have been if they had been able to make it the way they wanted.
