hey.........we all know the spanish got all their gold by plundering the new world.
the gold should go back where it came from (the new world).
of course not, but that is just as rediculous a position.

Tote that barge, lift that bale, Tizzz!
I know it's a hard life, wearing that suit, getting judgements against poor people, tying helpless maidens to railroad tracks, 'n all, but you make it sound like work! :o
Well I was born one morning when the sun didn't shine,
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine,
I loaded 17 tons, of silver and gold,
Nope, just not the same ring to it.

I know you're joking...
but I am curious if you know how many areas of law practice there are and what each does? Yes, almost all of us wear a suit, but so?
gotta love stereotypes. [laugh]

I am absolutely joking!
And yes, I do know that society couldn't function without lawyers of all types.
Just couldn't resist the opportunity for a ziing.
And, you gotta admit, your job is less strenuous than building bridges, or fighting fires.

That's true.
Personally I'd rather be worn out from physical work than stressed out from the other kinds.

having a strenuous job will tire you and build muscle
mentally stressful jobs will just kill you.
in college, i did construction and demolition for summer jobs. i've often wanted to go back to that....
living...
if done for a long enough period...
will kill you.

the writers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, I would say -- creating a nation of laws means you need lawyers.

no, if you want to take that line, go further back (magna carta, or even Hammurabi)
our "society" has only been propping up the profession for a little more than 200 years

well, now its about my kid's college fund and our retirement, so yes, a big part of it is money vs pleasure..

excellent point, but those documents have nothing to do with American law, except as an interesting historical counterpoint. Try using the Code of Hammurabi as an authority in a lawsuit and see where it gets you... (however, it might score you points in SCOTUS)

Granted you can't cite them in US Court these days but do they really have "nothing to do with" American law or our "society"?

Of course they had some impact on how our founding documents were crafted, but do you really think they impact the cost of a doughnut & coffee at the local Dunkin' Doughnuts?
No, they don't. The Code of Hammurabi was specific to legal procedure and the status of the monarchy, the Magna Carta laid out the powers of Parliament and the ruling class vis a vis the monarchy. Our legal system doesn't have a monarchy and the ABA's model rules of legal procedure are pretty much universal, so you don't get much play on the historic shit except at the water cooler.
