Title: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 15, 2008, 10:55:33 AM Hey guys
For all you who know Mason Andrews, (OMRAA racer, he pits with us every track/race day) he was in a really bad accident on his bike on 1-5 this morning. Last Mo and I knew, he's on life support in the ICU. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Please, let's all ride safe out there ok? Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 15, 2008, 07:34:56 PM Hey guys, thanks for your support and good thought, Mase really needs it right now.
He was in a medically induced coma to keep him from inadvertently ripping his tubes out of his mouth. They took him off to try to get a response from him, but he was not responding to pain or waking up. He will be going into surgery to hopefully repair his upper arm tomorrow morning. He's pretty busted. Broken wrist, arm, shoulder blade, collar bone, and his ankle is shattered. He has some swelling in his brain and a little bleeding, they put an apparatus in his head tonight to relieve some of the pressure. He is in stable condition, and we will not know for at least 72 hours what his recovery will look like, the swelling in his head will most likely get worse before it gets better. At this point, we probably shouldn't have too many people there visiting, so I won't post up which hospital he is at, but I will let you guys know when he can accept more visitors. Thanks, and again, ride safe. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Tailgunner on May 15, 2008, 09:45:41 PM So unword worthy this...
Prayers and energy to MASON (halo guy installed here. missing, what? from where?) A family member rolled thru this misery scene early on and something destroyed a red car starting at the rear. I'm freaked of it. Mason is you/me/all us. Fight!!! Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: NEIKOS on May 16, 2008, 04:51:14 AM Is that what happened? He hit a car?
Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 16, 2008, 07:24:17 AM What we think happened was this:
Mason was in the left lane, going way too fast for morning traffic. He changed into the right lane and wasn't expecting the person he changed behind to be going as slow as she was. He rear ended her and hit the back window, went over the top of the car and down the front, then hit the barrier next to the road. Apparently he had been weaving in and out of traffic and was doing about 90 when he hit the car, she was doing about 40. But this is coming from supposed eye witnesses, so it may or may not be what was really going on. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: ryandalling on May 16, 2008, 08:18:25 AM That is too bad. I know we have all been guilty of this. Which is why I try not to ride freeway... back roads and the track... seems so much safer these days.

Please ride safe everyone.. m Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: mossimo on May 17, 2008, 04:40:27 AM Man thats a bummer.
I think we are guilty of utilizing our small size in traffic, reality hurts. :( Best of luck to Mason, thats a bummer. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 17, 2008, 02:36:54 PM Went and saw him this morning.
They are limiting his visits now to two people at a time with no talking to him or touching him. He's made amazing progress since they invoked those rules. His ICP (inner cranial pressure, I think) is really good, and he seems to be improving. Let's all root for Mase and hope he wakes up soon. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: marvellous on May 17, 2008, 03:19:06 PM He's just napping, taking a break... :)
Seriously, glad he's doing better, and we're all keeping up the good thoughts... Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 17, 2008, 03:23:43 PM He's just napping, taking a break... :) Seriously, glad he's doing better, and we're all keeping up the good thoughts... That's pretty much what it is, at least in my opinion. His body just went through a big trauma, it needs to stay asleep to heal. He'll come out of it when he's ready. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: JohnnyDucati on May 17, 2008, 09:38:29 PM NM-
It's nice that you went to visit him. Hopefully all the good vibes will help and he'll be up and and at 'em in no time. J Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Mother on May 21, 2008, 08:57:30 PM Any update on Mason?
Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 22, 2008, 04:23:08 PM Went and saw him last night.
He is still comatose but improving. Apparently he was breathing on his own for a bit but they put the respirator back in as a precaution. He is in surgery at the moment, for his left humerous and wrist. Hopefully he will be out by 8:30, the surgery will go for about 3 hours or so. If anyone would like to donate to his "get well fund", you can donate here (http://www.innerrageracing.com/GetWellSoonMason) via paypal, or you can go into a US Bank branch and donate there. Mason has health as well as moto insurance, but he won't be able to return to work for awhile and I'm sure his expenses will be astronomical, so any help you guys can give would be awesome. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 27, 2008, 12:55:21 PM Another update on Mase:
He ended up with a blood clot in his right thigh yesterday which was pretty scary. They put him on blood thinners and put a filter in before he goes into surgery again. His ICP (intracranial pressure) was spiking but is really low today. He's doing better than ever, the clot was a little scary but it looks like he'll be ok. Thank you all!! Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: ryandalling on May 27, 2008, 01:33:30 PM Keep us updated.
Anyone have a pic? I know a lot of people would recognize him. He is a fun person to hang with. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 27, 2008, 01:37:36 PM Here's Mase in all his charming glory.

He is a fun person to hang with. Unless he's drunk at Motocorsa and being about 6 inches taller and at least 100lbs heavier than you grabs you by the shoulders, pulls you within inches of his face and says "I'm not gay but you got beautiful eyes." My ass was puckered for a week! [laugh] I'm still sending good/happy energy his way. I miss the big guy and hope he recovers really, really ,really quickly! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Tailgunner on May 27, 2008, 02:15:09 PM Here's Mase in all his charming glory. I like that guy, he's fun :) kinda rowdy [evil] This guy will make it, full recovery [thumbsup] Hurry up Mason ;) I want to go see him when it's cool to. Thanks for updating us C. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 27, 2008, 03:17:30 PM Mason is very cool, I love hearing stories about him because I think "that is so Mase!!"
I'll check and make sure it's ok to visit him, then let you guys know. I think it would mean a lot to his family to meet more of his friends. His mom is wonderful and has enjoyed meeting everyone so far. *edit* So Mase is in the West Wing ICU at Legacy Emanual Hospital on Vancouver ave. here in North Portland. Visiting hours are from 8:30am to 10:00pm with a shift change between 6:30pm and 8:30pm, so no visitors during that time. If you go see him, there is a telephone at the entrance to the ICU, pick it up and ask the nurse if it's okay if Mason Andrews has visitors, she'll unlock the door if it's cool. Make sure you say hi to his mom, her name is JoAnn and his Dad's name is Bob. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Tailgunner on May 29, 2008, 09:36:59 AM Awh yes, Emanual ICU... I know it well.
So I want to go see Mase after work today, gonna try. What should I bring him, flowers? I THINK NOT!!! He'd probably launch the t.v. remote at me. I'll just bring an extra helmet with me (just in case) and maybe some dirty magazines [thumbsup] Thank you NeenjaMastah, your the coolest :) billy :) Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 29, 2008, 10:03:26 AM Ha ha, flowers aren't allowed in the ICU but I'm sure he'll appreciate the mags when he wakes up.
Mylar balloons are allowed though, and you'll get to see all the creative things people have brought for him... Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: scott_araujo on May 29, 2008, 10:39:03 PM I just got back from visiting Mason, he's doing well. His parents were there and his friend Carrie too. His intercranial pressure is down and they have removed the tube from his head. He's on the ventilator sometimes and sometimes not but his lung that was collapsed is doing well, no signs of pneumonia either. He's opening his eyes today and moving them a bit left and right. His parents say this is new and good. His brain was not severely injured. His brain stem was hurt a little more and that's probably why he's not waking up yet. They also got good news this week, the neurologist expects him to make a full recovery in about 12 months.
I think he's having another surgery tomorrow to fix up his left arm. The staff are limiting his visits before and after surgery so that they can care for him. Please respect that so he can get the best care possible. His parents are nice folks. His dad has actually found some disability insurance that he qualifies for (!) so that should help a little with his bills. His mom told me EDR is printing up Superman logo style stickers with 757, his race number. I think they are available at the shop and they'll all be putting them on their bikes for the Rose Festival events. His parents are staying around the south end of 23rd and are looking for a small gym so they can exercise. If anyone knows of one please let them know. Scott Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on May 30, 2008, 09:08:27 AM Thanks Scott, for the update.
Stickers are available at EDR, like he said. There is also a benefit that I posted in another thread that you guys can participate and help him out. It's awesome that he's moving around as much as he is. I spoke to one of his doctors yesterday and she said it is possible while in a coma to get closer to the surface (waking up) and then go back down again. That may be what is happening when he opens his eyes and moves around. Waking up from a coma is a very gradual process, it's not usually like in soap operas where the person suddenly opens their eyes, looks around, and starts talking. What usually goes on is the patient will be awake very briefly, seconds even, then the effort is so much that they will go back to how they were. The next time they may waken for a little longer, then a little longer until they are awake for minutes at a time. This is exhausting for them, so this may take a long time for them to fully "wake up." Most comas don't last longer than a few weeks, when they do it's called a "persistent vegetative state." That's where you see people out for 6 months or longer. I'm confident that Mase is not going to be one of those, but I'm also not a doctor so it's hard to say. Thanks for all your positive energy guys, let's keep it up!! [beer] Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: scott_araujo on May 30, 2008, 11:21:52 AM One more thing, his heart rate is spiking at times. They think this is because he is beginning to feel pain, another good sign.

He is primarily off all his pain meds, only an occasional antibiotic and feeding tube. We're taking that as a good sign. Mo swears Mase gave him a cheesy smile when he was massaging his swollen hand and arm, eye cracked open. So we're thinking he's definitely becoming more and more responsive as time goes on. Amber gave him a kickass mohawk yesterday, so when he does wake up he'll have different hair and sparkly fingernails and toenails. Don't forget about his fund raiser on the 18th at American Cowgirls, I better see you guys there or there will be some serious ass-whoopin. Today when I went to see him, his eyes were wide open and he was blinking and moving his eyes around. I more than halfway expected him to look over and just start talking. He still appears to be "not quite there" though. I don't know if he's still classified as comatose, I was unable to speak to any of his doctors. I went to his bedside and stroked his hair a little bit, talking to him. He actually moved his eyes over as if he were looking at me. He moved his mouth like he wanted to say something, and he was trying so hard to speak. Despite that, he is still catatonic. When his eyes are open they are glazed over and he doesn't really focus them on anything. But I'm happy to say he was looking at things and seemed to be trying to talk all afternoon. He is SO CLOSE, so close, and yet so far still. I want him to wake up so badly and he seems almost ready to do so. On a more medical note, he still has small hemorrhages in his frontal lobe which they are concerned about, but his last CT showed no damage to his brain stem, which made us all breathe a big sigh of relief. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: marvellous on June 18, 2008, 09:05:02 PM Good news, C... thank you!! I've never met Mason, but we're all pulling for him!!!
Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on June 22, 2008, 11:42:58 AM Major update:
Got a call from Mason's mom this morning saying he was mouthing words and sentences, and actually asking the nurse to stop pinching him because it hurt. Packed up my yard sale and zoomed to the hospital. While I was visiting him, he kept squeezing my hand, stoking it with his thumb. His tracking was a little better, and he was definitely focusing more now than he was last time. We weren't able to decipher all the things he was trying to say, but some of it we could make out: "I'm sorry" "I love you" "Oh yes" (after being asked if he needed a bottle of Crown Royal [laugh]) He still isn't classified as "awake" but he is getting there. There are ten levels of comatose, and he is currently a level 3 with 1 being completely incapacitated with no responses to any outside stimulation. So we have a long way to go but I'd say he's gone up a level or two in just the past few days. Thanks again everyone for all your good thoughts, they have obviously helped!!!! Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: JohnnyDucati on June 22, 2008, 03:59:11 PM That is really awesome news!

Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on June 30, 2008, 07:22:44 PM Exciting update about Mason today!!
Mo and I went and saw him about 7pm. Mo asked him how he was doing and he threw him the hang loose sign! So, not only is he responding more to our visits, a little bit of the old Mase shone through today. Here's hoping for a full recovery and to get our Mason back. On a medical note, he still has the trach in. We spoke to one of his nurses and she said she wasn't sure when they will take it out, but when they do it will be a gradual process to wean him off. He is breathing on his own now, the trach is just there to help when needed and to keep the air moist. Title: Re: Rider down on 1-5 this morning Post by: Betty Rage on July 10, 2008, 02:29:07 PM Great news!
Yesterday Mo and I went and saw Mase. He has his trach completely removed, he is awake, talking, and eating solid foods. His brain is still not completely wired yet, as a lot of his sentences were slurred together or didn't make much sense. But the old Mase is definitely back! Lot's of F Bombs being dropped. I asked him if the nurses were hitting on him yet and he said "Pssssshhhh, which ones aren't?" He was very happy to see us and is aware that he's been gone a long time. I told him we've all been pulling for him and he said "Good, I've been pulling for you guys." It made me smile, but I told him he should just keep pulling for himself and he agreed. Like I said, he said a lot of things that didn't make a lot of sense but he seemed to understand that. His brain knows what he wants to say but it's not firing quite right yet so it comes out different. He still has a slight staph infection and now a bladder infection, but he's getting better by the second. His mood was really really good, he was in high spirits yesterday and was laughing and joking around with us like he used too. He told Mo and I we are going to Japan, and him and Mo are going to France also and kicking that Armstrong guys ass. Here's to Mase, and his speedy recovery... I'd like to go visit but don't want to take away from family and friend time . . . You can go visit him anytime chuck. He's in the TRACU-15 section now at Legacy, no longer in ICU. His family comes and goes, but they will love it if you come see him. They only ask that you limit it to one or two people at a time. When you go in, you might want to remind him of who you are, he seems to have some trouble recalling people right away. If you want, I can meet you there and go in with you.
