Title: New Headlight and Clip-ons Test Fit - NOW WITH PICS
Post by: desmotwin999 on March 24, 2009, 08:12:47 PM
hey all, i just finished the first test fit of the new speigler headlight and lsl clip-ons. i will not be reusing the stock headlight bracket. I now have 2 metal inserts sticking out the bottom of the top triple where the gauges install. does anyone know if these can be removed?

I'm thinking about going with that headlight too, any pictures?  Did it mount up pretty easy?

those posts are pressure fit and can be removed with a pair of vice grips. in fact, when i removed my stock headlight setup (specifically the U-bracket) they came out with it.
just wiggle them around, maybe use a little lube... [thumbsup]

edit: just looked again and realized your bike is an s4r........but should be the same as my s2r

So far install has been pretty simple. Everything just basically plugs in. The most difficult part will be trying to figure out how to secure the wires without the headlight U bracket. I was hoping to drop the gauges down but unfortunately, there is not enough space...the headlight in its lowest position is about a half inch below the gauges.

That's good advice for countless occasions!  ;D [laugh]

it's a roll pin.  Grab with a pair of vicegrips, twist and pull.

Nice,  I'm surprised I haven't seen this light on a Monster before.  I think I've seen it on a custom Multistrada though.  Please post up more pictures once you have the gauges back on.

Just screw in the appropriate sized screw into the triple to push the rolled pin out.  Works like a charm.  [thumbsup]

What are the other set of brackets above the top headlight bracket?

LOL - now why didn't I think of that!

ok, so here is another photo with clip-ons installed. The wiring coming off the controls is a bit of a birds nest...is there any way to clean that up or is that the way it supposed to look?

I think that looks great. Vastly superior to the 696 headlight in my book. Fix your clutch master's pee cup. It looks waaaay too crooked.

Ya, I'm really happy with the look. It's not actually done yet...I just mounted everything up to test the fit. I have to take it apart and drill the holes for the controls. Does drilling the holes weaken the bars? Is there another way to get them mounted without drilling? I remember reading someone grinding down the nubs and putting grip tape or something similar.

Maybe paint/powder-coat the headlight brackets black?

Yeah, you saw it on a Multi. How can you forget.

It's unforgetable:

Desmotwin999,
Where are this braket from? Where can I find those?

Nice job!!!  [thumbsup]

Its done! took her out for a ride yesterday...wow, what a difference the clip-ons make...really feel connected to the bike.

Here is a pic of the finished job.

I think it looks fantastic. Might I suggest a few things if you find yourself with more money than sense in the future:

Folding levers. Nothing like a tip-over precipitated by a fat woman trying to squeeze between your bike and a park car to make you wish your levers weren't busted. Unfortunately, these are a little spendy for what they are, and I still can't figure out why they cost so damn much.

Smaller Gauges. I'm in the same boat - Two lovely big dials greeting me giving me easy readouts of all the necessaries. However, I've always thought the cluster and enclosure looked a bit "large" from the front - And the MotoGadget stuff keeps looking more and more attractive, especially in the applications I've seen on Monsters.

Just some ideas to kick around when you have your credit card crying out to be used, you are sitting in front of the computer, and you are nearly out of beer.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have a look at the levers...who makes them? I hear what you're saying about the gauges. I'm not crazy about how they look...definitely looked cleaner prior to putting the gauges back. Can you install gauges on late model Monsters? What happens to the immobilizer?

I think there's a work-around with this, and the motogadget has a whole unit available to streamline the installation. Check out Rizoma's levers, you can see them at PJ's or Motowheels or DesmoWorks or Desmoworld for your options. Those look like 749/999 masters?

love the light, dislike the gauges even more now.....they take too much away from the light.
