Title: Oh motogadget, why must you tempt me so...
Post by: Drunken Monkey on March 25, 2009, 01:22:34 PM
Just as I start to think about how to re-do my wiring harness... this comes along.

My poor, poor wallet.

I hate you.  Why couldn't you keep that secret to yourself, ya evil bastard.

I think you've just found me something that will save a bunch of time.

Since getting my gauges flashed, I no longer need the dash.  This will make the wiring rework a breeze!  Pingel switches woot!

That's a pretty slick unit.

Download the manual prior to purchase.... some mounting restrictions.

Worse, I actually spent about 50 hours teaching myself microcontroller programming, putting together a relay board, soldering things up and trying to make a durable enclosure. All trying to create a far more inferior version of what they've made.

It seems like under the seat should work well. I worry that under tank might be too close to the ignition.

Weren't you gonna make me one of those?  Now I gotta go actually buy the damn thing?

Under the seat *may* work.  As long as I can get rid of all those relays.

looks like the only 'relay' you'll need to keep will be the starter solenoid.

Solid state relays with integrated, self-resetting circuit breakers (i.e. no fuses)

spooge.

Gawdam that looks cool!

And here I was happy with myself for rewiring the brake light and turnsignals!   [laugh]

Man, I can't wait to read about your progress.   [popcorn]

Features at a glance:
# operation with push button switch gear or conventional switch gear (e.g Japanese or Euro-Bikes)
# completely replaces the fuse box or circuit breakers. Up to 8 independent circuits can be digitally controlled and switched off if necessary. Automatic reset after fault clearance.
# diagnostic function with 15 indicator LEDs
# the ultimate in operational safety due to switching operation with micro processor monitoring and controlling.
# flexible configuration of all functions due to easy setup
# no mechanical relays. Latest solid state components guarantee ultrafast switching without voltage drop or wear
# small housing
# the m-Unit makes a simplified wiring setup possible
# switching of high and low-beam with only one push button
# integrated digital hazard lights
# integrated digital, load independent flasher relay (like m-Flash). Self canceling flashers with adjustable settings
# integrated digital brake light modulator (like m-Stop). Flashing mode with adjustable settings
# integrated horn relay
# integrated anti-theft alarm
# smart switch off function of loads during start
# One-wire rear and brake light setup possible
# absolutely water proof and vibration resistant
# 'Made in Germany' by motogadget and therefore of the highest quality

I like the features, especially the last one!  ;)

That's pretty cool. Now if they only made a device that allows me to put on one of their gauges and keep the immobilizer working without having to take the dash apart and hide the circuitry.

I want either

Looks neato, with a lot of stuff i don't understand and a price that i thought (at first) was in the range of $33,000.  :o

yeah, Europeans use the comma as we use the decimal...I thought it seemed kinda expensive... ;)

Sure. But only if you demonstrate the fork trick and let me post the results on YouTube. Also you have to be naked and covered with dielectric grease [puke]

Seriously? Hell ya. You've already got aftermarket switch gear. The rest is more a matter of subtracting wires rather than adding.

Plus it'll let me make the beast with two backs up your bike first give me valuable experience I can use on other projects.   ;D

PM me. Maybe we can do a group order and finally get the right temp sensor for your bike. In exchange you can handle the annoying process of ordering from motogadget.  [thumbsup]

he usually is anyway. [roll]

i would be down for one of these too (trying to keep up with the cool kits)...but my bike runs now, and i promised i would stop futzing with it.

That thing is actually pretty small (don't take that out of context, you sick f*cks).  length/width/depth: 101 x 61 x 28 mm.    4 in x 2.5in x 1in  That would take up less space than the relays I currently have under my seat (seen below).

Oh, now I get it.  This is all just an elaborate plan to get me naked.  Again.  Just typical.   [roll]

Why does it matter if it runs?  You only use it to rest your beers/scotch on.   [cheeky]

I've been wanting a motoscope classic for the longest time.

Right about until the moment when I saw this:

God I want it so much  [bang] [bang] [bang]

Apparent there aren't direct links. Click on the black screened gauges called the chronoclassic.

I feel your pain.  Seriously.  I spent four-yever trying to figure out which of those two I wanted.  I finally decided the black didn't work as well with the overall look of my bike.  But I coulda gone either way.

So, do you re-wire pin-to-pin, or solder on extensions?

Sorry, I think that was a stupid question.  You go pin-to-pin.

Title: Re: Oh motogadget, why must you tempt me so...
Post by: TAftonomos on March 27, 2009, 06:59:04 AM
 Extensions are for hair   [laugh]

I had to buy the proper crimps to do my wiring harness.  Crimping is better IMHO....no chance of a failed solder joint do to vibration or movement.   And quicker too  [thumbsup]  Some raychem and extra pins and I was good to go.

Crimps are the copper or Al tubing with a plastic sheath that you crush to make the connection, right?

Excuse the newb question; I have very little experience working on bikes. So did ya'll essentially build custom housings for the guage? I'm wondering how or where i would put that thing on a 696.

I bought the metal connectors that go inside the factory connectors.  Then, de-pin the connector, crimp on the new connector, and lock it in place in the factory plug.  Factory plugs. much lighter wire.

Tip - Instead of buying multiple colors (raychem is expensive wire), I use small labels I've printed on the computer, and some clear shrink wrap to label the ends of each wire.

Did a car harness once, strictly a race vehicle....lost 15lbs of WIRE.   The ducati harness won't do that, but shedding the battery-box and fuse panel for that motogadget thing WILL save a few lbs.

Every ounce counts.  Start adding them up :)

Thanks Theo. :)

I recently worked with some weatherproof connectors and pins when I re-wired my brake light and turnsignals.  Not too bad.  Maybe this isn't beyond my capabilities.  Thanks also on the label tip.

I'm not so much interested in loosing lbs., as I am in making the bike look cleaner and making access to several things easier.

In the case of the top bike, Spidey/ Duck Stew just used the mount available from motogadget and attached it via some mounting screws to the top triple.

In the case of the lower pic, I took an aluminum headlight, got a machinist wizard to cut a hole in the headlight, then made my own internal mount out of aluminum sheet.

I recommend the first method unless you're insane  ;D

Well, mostly....  The majority of the stock mounting blank from MotoGadget was used, but I did customize it to fit the two mounting holes in the triple as well as bend it slightly up before coating it black and installing it.

As far as DrunkenMonkey goes....  Yes, what he did in that headlight is insane...

Before he runs out and picks one up, the 696 has the immobilzer in the gauge cluster as well right, so swapping it out would be a major undertaking to rewire wouldn't it?

Title: Re: Oh motogadget, why must you tempt me so...
Post by: Drunken Monkey on March 27, 2009, 02:34:49 PM
Whoops. Forgot all about the immobilizer.

Unless you're insane and basically hide the stock gauge unit & immobilizer under the tank (Hiya 'Stu!) you can't mount aftermarket gauges on any bike with an immobilizer.

Alternatively, you can pay someone to reflash your ecu to eliminate the immobilizer feature that "slaves" the ECU to the gauges. That's (IMHO) the more sane approach.
