Title: Damaged tank, reccomended remedy
Post by: redial on March 26, 2009, 06:22:07 AM
Hi guys,

Couple questions: out of the two monsters i have gone to see so far (in my search, if u have on near PA for <4k plz email me at redialed@gmail.com) both have the issue where the tank leaks fuel from the hinge. From my search i have deduced that this is caused by not smart people filling the tank full of gas and then trying to lift it. The weld bead cracks and the tank is effed, and if you dont fix it the frame gets ruined from the fuel!

1. What is the recomended solution for this? my buddy picked up a 750 and we were going to seal the tank with some sealer, but will the flexing weld cause it to reopen? is new tank the real way to do it right?

2. Is it possible for a later model tank to be fit to an earlier bike? since were replacing the tank anyways, the new tanks fit me better in the knees (over 6'2). and looks better to boot

thanks for the help guys, appreciate it

The reinforcement plate needs to be brazed all the way around to the 'floor' of the tank or it will leak again.

If you are buying sealer I'd suggest POR-15. Don't use KREEME.

What year is the bike and what do you mean by later model?

Duc Painter, thank you so much for the comments (and showing me this awesome tech forum)

I found the answer to my year specific tank question in the great sticky above, so ill just reread that and i think ill be set :)

thank you also for letting me know how to fix this. ive got a bucket of por 15 all ready to go, just gotta research the brazing

I was looking at an overpriced 620 2003 at my local dealer, but it has the leak. so i told them i want them to fix it, just curious how much it costs.

A good friend of mine just picked up a 1997 750 which also has the leak (and the frame has suffered for it) so i am trying to help him get it sorted out.

p.s. a gentelemen from your neck of the woods emailed me about a 620 which i believe you have worked on, so if the dealer bike doesnt work out i may shoot you an email to hear about the history of that bike. im also very excited to see a DIY painters tips thread,. cant wait to pour over that when im not stealing company time :shh:

cheers

redial, instead of taking the risk of the dealer doing a poor repair, you might try asking for a discount and putting that money towards a quality repair by ducpainter.
