Title: How much could I sell my bike for
Post by: kawazar on March 28, 2009, 06:46:57 AM
I am looking for opinions on what my bike might be worth. Its a 01 900ie Dark. The bike has 42k on it with a DP kit which includes the ECU, open air box and Remus high mount titanium pipes. One small ding in the tank, nothing noticable. This year I put on new Bridgestone BT021 tires ( 0 miles), aluminum adjusters on the swingarm, Bucci belts, I have new seals on order for behind the clutch basket and a new bearing for the pressure plate, a new Paulimoto clutch spider, S/S spring and bolt kit for the clutch, new Progrip gel grips and a new clutch pushrod seal kit. All this stuff I bought this year for about $650 and will be installed before I start riding. I also installed a Evoluzione billet clutch slave cylinder 6k ago with a open clutch cover, bar end mirrors and other things I probably forgot. The valves were adjusted at the dealer at 36K and I did the fuel filter last year. Oh, I changed the oil this year too with Mobil 1 and K&N filter. I think thats it. Sorry it's so long, just wanted to include everything so I can get a good opinion. Sorry no pic, I need to take one. Thanks for the input. I was thinking of selling because I just won't ride it much in the future.

Maybe start in the 4500 range. It certainly sounds like it was well cared for.

It is well cared for. I didn't hesitate to repair or replace things. I didn't really keep receipts because I never intended to sell it. I was worried about the mileage. I thought that would take alot of value out of it. My first thought was around 3000 but I didn't know because you don't see alot of these bikes with this mileage. Is there a blue book guide for motorcycles I can use for an approximate value?

Keep in mind I'm  from Canada and think in Canadian dollars. A reasonable person should appreciate that a well cared motor has along life span. They are rare but these "reasonable" people do exist. I often look at this way. Some times a posession is worth more than the money it can fetch. In these cases I simply buy the replacement and patiently wait for the right person to come along. One thing I get a kick out of is the look on the face of a vulture when I refuse their ridiculous offer.

I would suspect lower than 4500, simply because of the mileage. It definitely sounds well cared for, but that's going to be a hard number to ignore.
Look at "Monsters for Sale." Mr. I's got a beautiful SR4 for sale for 5500, and it hasn't sold, probably because of the 31k miles. It's still a very good deal at that price, but hasn't gone anywhere.

I'd say part it out. You will probably do better in the $$ department. It's true, a well taken care of, regularly ridden, high mileage scoot is better than a low mileage, neglected one, that's still a big number. It will really narrow your buying audience.

Well it is the market more than the mileage.  My opinion on mileage especially on a bike is that if it has that many miles it has probably been well cared for taking into account the visual status (if it looks to be in good condition) and it has high mileage then it is likely that it is a good bike.  Most bikes that are poorly maintained wont make it to a higher mileage.

The market for "toys" sucks right now. (if you are selling) 4500 may have been a good price a year or two ago but in the current buyers market I would say that is wishful thinking.  Probably more in the 3800 range right now.

honestly even in a "good market" 4500 would be pushing it.

afterall would you pay this much if someone else was selling a 42k mile bike that is close to 8 years old?  heck even monsters that are 3-5 years old you can find for under 10k miles on them in pristine condition for around 5k or so.

granted you have more stuff on your bike, but still, its got mileage on it and its a bit dated at 8 years old, i would say honestly you are looking at 3500 or so and possibly 4k or more "if" you can find someone that wants to pay that.  if you wait long enough usualy you can find a person to pay that.

Kelly Blue Book has a motorsports section now, but it's not as thorough as their car section, and it doesn't compensate for mileage. It lists your year 900 dark (You didn't specify) as having a value of $3800-$4800.
That gets you in the ballpark. Now you just have to figure out how much to reduce the price for mileage, and how much the mods are worth. If you need to squeeze every last dollar out of it, it would be worth selling the ECU and airbox seperate from the bike.

Thanks for all the help guys. If I do sell it I will probably start at $3500. I totaled up all of the stuff I bought this year and it was actually $750. I figured with that factored into it the 3500 would be a good starting spot.

For reference, My local dealer had a nice 2001 M900sie for $5300 and it has 19,000 miles.  They had performed every service and had all service records available.  It was as nice as any sitting in the show room and had high pipes.
