Title: stripped out the bolt holding the hugger to the swingarm - help
Post by: eyeboy on March 28, 2009, 08:11:00 AM
was removing the hugger, all the bolts came out fine except for the rear-most one on the swingarm. the insert the bolt screws into came loose and is now spinning freely, the bolt head is not stripped.

how do i get this out? the screw is about 1/4" unscrewed and the hugger is a bit rattley... can i fix the insert to the swingarm somehow or do i have to drill the whole mess out?

To fix it right is gonna be time consuming, and you'll damage something..it's inevitable.

How about JB Weld the insert to the swinger if you can get at it?

If the swing arm is aluminum, you can insert copper wire in the hole (for a temporary fix)-just be gentle when tightening

A permanent solution is welding or drilling out and tapping a larger thread

ugh. i will try the JB Weld first, the polt is pretty tight to the insert and i don't know if it (or the wire trick) will hold.

fortunately the dealer is 1/2 mile away if i need to go that route.

Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my chain rubbing block.  You rivnut is spinning.  Search for my thread from a few weeks ago for more info.

I would rind the head off. It is quick. Or try a razor blade under the head of the bolt. pry up as you turn the bolt. If the threads are not too far gone this may work.

If your swingarm is like my '99s, this is what you're up against.

If you can get a small screw driver tip in against the lip of the rivnut, chances are you can get the bolt out if it's not bunged up.  (chances are the reason it's spinning is it's been over tightened.)
If you can get the bolt out, you can then drill the top portion off the sert and it will fall into the SA and you can take it out by removing your wheel and chain adjuster.
Replacing it is as simple as finding someone with some metric nutserts and a tool to install it.

Rip it out with the tool of your choice and order a couple of new ones from McMasterCarr. 10 minutes and about $10.

Or you could just take the hugger off completely IMHO it looks better.
