Title: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: 377/400 on April 02, 2009, 07:12:54 PM NMMR....This is my 1st. posting. Don't have a clue how this works, but I'm fakin' it. Is any one interested in riding to the Trinity Site Sat.? WEATHER PERMITTING, OF CORSE (Pun intended.!) Twice a year, White Sands Missle Range opens it's gates to the public for access to Trinity, site of the first atomic bomb test. This barren desert locale is a significant place in NM history as well as the modern world. It offers a glimpse at the culmination of the top-secret Manhattan Project. The bomb was set off on July 16, 1945. Now a small lava oblisk marks ground zero. Included is the tour of McDonald Ranch House (No, not "THE" Ronald McDonald), remains of Jumbo ( no, not the elephant), and Ground Zero. Historical photos are also displayed. To get on WSMR, a photo ID, registration and proof of ins. is required. Meet at Smith's parking lot (Tramway/Central) at 8:00 or so and leave at 8:30 (yeah, am) Being gassed up and ready to roll thereabouts. East on 66 to Tijeras, south on 337 (14) to Mountainair. Gas up (the station is about 1mi. west on thru the town hwy 60). Double back and turn right back on 55. (14 turns into 55 at Tajique). Note: immediately passing The Shafffer Hotel in Mountainaire one can see the SWASTICA's that were placed on the outside of the bldg. circa. 1930's. Ancient Indian symbol of Peace!! Going south 39 miles to Claunch and another 22 miles to hwy. 54. HAMMER IT HOME! Right on 54 another 16 miles to Carrizozo. Gas up and head west on 380. HAMMER IT SOME MORE! 55 miles to Stallion gate. TOUR 5 miles south. (The Stallion gate is 12 miles east of San Antonio.) After the Tour, we head east to San Antonio and gas up/eat/drink (diet cola :-)) at The Owl Bar for their great green chile burgers. YEAH, the ORIGINAL OWL BAR. Not the one on Eubank. head back to Abq. taking the back roads, no less when ever possible. The old road (pre I-25) wanders off and on in places. email me: deblois@email.com call 505-450-4936 or lm message and text msg. Jim or ducman or redgloves. Gimmie a couple weeks notice before the next one and I'll be down this one is a no go for me though. Sounds like a good ride with a great destination though. [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: bonfy on April 02, 2009, 07:27:03 PM I'd love to do that route. I am not going to be back to the hood for several weeks though so will just copy the route and try it next time I'm in the area on my bike. Have a great ride!
Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: Zaster on April 02, 2009, 07:40:03 PM I will attempt to complete my Saturday project tomorrow so I can join you for the ride.
I will text or call you either way. Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: TheMav on April 02, 2009, 09:29:01 PM Wow, Dad. Sorry I just got this. I think I'm heading to Amarillo for the day. Besides, the weatherman say sthere could be up to 70mph gusts in the state on Saturday. DesertDuc seems to like the wind tunnel, but not this kid.
We could connect for another weekend, though. Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: TheMav on April 02, 2009, 09:33:37 PM Oh, and couldn't you come up with a better name? I got the bejeezus beat out of me for suggesting Scooter for JenniBelle. DDGM, where's the harsh? Sheesh.
Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: Kawboy on April 02, 2009, 10:21:06 PM Would love to do that but I work Friday night and Saturday night. It could be a bit harsh on Saturday, though. The projected low is for around 30. At 8 AM it won't be much higher and, like Mav said, windy. Projected 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. So be prepared.
Here's the web site for the Trinity site: http://www.atomictourist.com/trinity.htm (http://www.atomictourist.com/trinity.htm) Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: hunkypunk on April 03, 2009, 04:27:21 AM Have fun! I will be in California riding the canyons!

Title: Re: Trinity Site Tour April 4, 2009 Post by: kingbaby on April 03, 2009, 05:47:57 PM If ANY of you have not been & can make it. it is definitely worth the trip. We went last April and it was amazing. If you do go, make sure to read the Info they give you before you go into "Ground Zero". Dusty, XSBKX, Chris from PJ's & I took the big loop & added the V.L.A. (which was awesome), and then Pie Town O H Y E A H H H .
Yes we drove ( recommended ). I think a group ride to the VLA soon would be pretty cool if anyone is up for it. The wind has a tendency to blow in these parts ... Get use to it. I've ridden out there on the bike and it was windy every time. So unless you don't mind riding in it, a car is definitely more comfortable. Worth checking out at least once for sure though no matter how you choose to get there. Um, and Pie Town is a must do. :)
