Title: sparks on the freeway
Post by: BomberHead on April 05, 2009, 09:37:19 PM

I was told by an aquantance of mine that his friend has metal plates on the bottom of his boots so he can drag his feet on the freeway and make sparks. Please tell me this isn't a common practice.

Heard of this before. I think sparkies - knee pucks are bad ass. You send a 3-ft long spark out from your knees. However, they are outlawed at many tracks because they are distracting and you are leaving shards of metal on the track. That means, to wow your friends and have some giggles, you'd have to do this on a public road. I don't see myself dragging a knee on a public road ever. I just don't have that kind of confidence in the asphalt, lack of gravel, traffic to do it.

more common than you might think...  they make knee and toe sliders with magnesium or titanium in them to throw off sparks...

I've had sparkies before and the sparks were pretty underwhelming.  Motrax UK used to offer full Ti sliders, and I'd like to find a set of those in the future.

While I don't "condone" putting your knee down on public roads, this picture was obviously taken on a closed course with a crossed up rider.  The bike (SV650N) is a fantastic carving and beginner bike.  And every pic looks like a monkey f'n a coconut.  The bike was always a bit small.  The S2R seems to fit better.

On the subject of ATGATT that whole outfit was about $1000.  I really don't care who makes the gear or how pretty the designs are, only how well you survive when you go down.  I can tell you, every item in that picture is crash tested.  While the suit was destroyed, I wasn't.  I hitchhiked down the mountain after and got a truck to pick up my bike's remains, then head to the pub for some celebratory drinkin'....  This picture BTW didn't lead to said crash.

On my old CB550, I had a center stand that would spark if I stomped down on it at any speed over 40.  It would shower sparks in these nice arches and get tailgating cars to back way off.
