Title: Busa Rebuild
Post by: Slag on April 06, 2009, 05:55:51 AM
The Busa went down on March 31st at 40 mph.  A black Chevy 1500 ran a red light and started a chain of events that led to my crash.  Slippery pavement and too much brake and there goes the front end  [bang]  It was either that or have a collision.  I'll take a low side to a T-Bone any day.

I was wearing my gear (as always) and come out fairly unscathed. Nasty bruise on my left hip but that is it.  The Busa has about $1500 of damage, but none of it mechanical.  The Woodcraft engine case really saved the day!

My head hit so it was new helmet time.  My Vanson jacket almost completely wore through on the left forearm.  Not good.  My pants survived with no problems.  The palm on my left glove wore through but did not rash me.  This was my 2nd wreck with these gloves, but I am still disappointed in their failure.

Thanks  [thumbsup]  No turkey and no stop.  I am just going to lick my wounds and fix the bike myself.  Catie about has the carbon fairing thing figured out so we should be able to make our own for it.  It is nice being married to an engineer   [thumbsup] [beer]

What size gloves do you wear? I have some Kobe gloves that I bought used and they're too big across my palm... they say they're a medium but fit more like a large or xlarge in my opinion... I was gonna sell them... will offer discounts to DFM members.. :)

I am a medium, but thanks for the offer  [bow_down] [beer]  I picked up some of the '07 GP Techs that have the kevlar stitching.

Glad you made it out relatively unharmed.  Can you post pics of the damaged gear and maybe the brand / model of each.

The area that almost wore through on the jacket is only pea sized, but there is almost zero material left there.  The jacket is a Vanson.  This model does not come with armor, and my elbow took quite the hit.  You can add armor to the jacket and I should have.

The gloves are MotoGp, and I believe that the company went under.  This is crash #2 for them so I really can't complain.  It is hard to tell in the pic but the hole goes the entire way through the leather.

My pants did not show any wear at all.  I was wearing 5.11 tactical pants.

I wish that I could just buy the carbon fiber fairings.  We have enough carbon to make them ourselves or it wouldn't be happening.  Going to do a test run with fiberglass first.

Thanks for the pics.  There was a time I rode around in an armor-less jacket and shorts (total squid apparel).  Those days are long gone.  Only took a high side to convince me otherwise.

Damn, Slag, that totally sucks!  Very glad to hear you're relatively unscatched.  Thanks for including pics of your gear - I've always wondered if the seemingly outrageous cost of "good" gear is worth it... A picture is worth a thousand words  :'(

I'd love to know how your carbon fiber fairing turn out; done quite a bit of work lilke that on race cars (building fenders, hoods, diffusers air dams/splitters, misc. custom parts, etc., etc.)   You might be able to make something kind of different and sell it.  Could be a really fun project  [thumbsup]

I have worked with composites before, but never carbon.  We used to make kayaks out of kevlar and fiberglass.  I am actually working on a business idea that involves composites, but is not motorsport related.  That would be a dream for me, but the market is already saturated and the economy won't support another fairing maker.

This has been a goal that I have had for a long time and the pieces are just now coming together.  I am working on the design right now and may have a prototype soon.

Slag, I bet you can get that Vanson fixed, maybe patch it from the inside.  Call Audrey at ML for a reference, she used to know somebody that would fix racing leathers and did good work.  And next time put some freakin armor in there!!

Zach, check out Magical Racing (Japan) http://www.magicalracing.co.jp/ (http://www.magicalracing.co.jp/) and oppracing.com http://www.oppracing.com/ (http://www.oppracing.com/) for Busa carbon stuff. Just saying. [thumbsup]

Wow! Just checked the board now too. Sorry to hear about your wreck. I'm glad you came out fine.

I'm not sure, but I think you can send your jacket to Vanson and the will repair it to almost new condition....or there is this lady that is very well known in the world of motorcycle leathers repair or alterations. This is her website:

http://spyderleatherworks.com/ (http://spyderleatherworks.com/)

Hope it all turns out fine. Can't wait to see a carbon fiber Busa.  [thumbsup]
