Title: So, what would you do with your mid-life crisis?
Post by: superjohn on April 06, 2009, 04:59:44 PM
OK, so I'm at the mid point. I have no credit card debt. No dependents. A decent income in a relatively safe, stable job with a good amount of savings.

I think all of this is adding up to wanting to do something just for me. I've been looking at used Ferrari 308s and new Corvettes. I've also thought about finally doing all the cool hme remodeling I've been thinking of like the outdoor kitchen, indoor kitchen remodel, and hardwood floors. I've also thought about taking a nice relaxing vacation to some far off land.

The downside is, I work a lot and don't have time to go on vacation. I really don't need a new car, and enjoy the one I have now. I have 2 motorcycles, so another one isn't really prudent (unless an 888 SPO lands in my lap) and I don't really entertain, nor am I planning on moving so the home improvements seem like sort of a waste. I suppose some Spitzer class professional mammary model would be an option, but it doesn't seem worth it.

So, I was thinking, what's the most irresponsible source of information about an equally irresponsible decision? Hey I know!!!! A DMF Poll!!!  ;D

In this market, even with a decent amount in savings and a stable job, I'd save unless a REALLY good deal comes along...

New option:

If you must spend money, give it away. I could use a couple grand to support my lack of will power to finish my thesis.  ;D But I'm sure there are other more responsible places you could put your money to good use and still get a good feeling out of it.

you know, there's a procedure that's cheaper than a breast job that simply pulls the tendons tight again, so you get the 20 year old naturals you fell in love with...

And home improvements are best spent by staying in said home and enjoying them aren't they?  An outdoor kitchen?!  If you build that, you gotta use it!!  Just make sure the patio is appropriate for parking that 888SPO on...

Or go to South Africa and ride in a Russian MIG, take a safari and take a dip in a great white cage!  [evil]

You're doing it all wrong.

Mid-life crisis is when you do something poorly thought out, irresponsible, and above all, epically stupid.

The fact that you're trying to plan it out and do it in some sort of sane manner utterly ruins it.

Take a high limit credit card or two. Go to Vegas. Get as drunk as you can, then go shopping.

In the morning, tell us what you bought-if it was an exotic sports car, bike, or hooker.

Take pics.

If you work alot and don't have time for a vacation....

I think the vacation is exactly what you need.

Screw the planning though....pack a bag and just GO! leave enough money so that when you end up on some south pacific island with no money and a hang over 4 months later...you can call home and get a flight back to the real world

i'm going to be 35 in 2 weeks and oddly enough have been thinking about it. I found a 1920's t-bucket for sale by me. thinking about that. Also sat in the GT 500 at the Ford dealer by my house.
Did a comparo online of the SRT8 Challenger, Charger, Vette and GT500. I think I can convince the wife once we get one of the other cars paid off.

How much is a good ammount of savings?  Adage goes that one's net worth should be at least  - Age/10 * annual salary
Pay off the house - think of what you could do afterwards with the extra money per month.

Budget in some smaller rewards until those two goals are met.

I've been thinking about these mid-life crisis issues, too.  I just turned 39, and Wifey will be 39 this summer.   We've got a few $$ in the bank and can entertain some really fun possibilities.

Some things I've considered:

  • Big Vacation - Hawaii, Fiji, Phuket, Greek Islands, etc.  Lots of cool opportunities here.
  • Sports car - Porsche, Corvette, etc....  I don't wanna wait 'til I'm 60.
  • Asian mistress w/some aftermarket mods*

As it stands, the "Big Vacation" idea is the most likely for us to pursue.  Still looking for more options to add to this list, tho.   :)

*Oddly enough, Wifey vetoed this one.   [laugh]

I'm not that far off. I just turned 37, but my father and grandfather died in their 50's so, even though my alcoholism isn't quite to their levels, I'm not counting on going too far beyond 74.

This is pretty much the same thoughts I've been having. Except I don't have a wife.  [evil]

Lot's of good options so far. I'm still mulling it over, but I think they'd have to make me the sweetheart deal of a lifetime to go for a 'vette at this point. Especially since I still like my Honda and can afford to drive it a year and get something used next year if I so desire.

Vacations have been narrowed down to:
1.) Skip Barber Driving School
2.) Japan (Tokyo & Kyoto)
3.) Vietnam & Thailand
4.) Save for the Monaco GP in 2010

Problem is, I'm not so sure I can get 2-3 weeks off this year. We'll see.

I think I'm still going to do some minor home improvements in addition to something frivolous. Not all of them, but enough to make the house nicer.

Well, I don't have THAT much, but I'm also not looking to quit my job either.  ;D

Someday I'm going to shun modern civilization and spend my days living in a hut on an island in the South Pacific, but not for another 20 years  :'(

if you haven't ever traveled, travel.

if you aren't into cars, getting a nice car is cool but if you aren't really into it, its useless.  if you don't really entertain and really enjoy being a homebody, then don't do the house stuff, most house improvements are for "other people to see" how cool you are, if you are happy with it now, then no need to put in more money you can always do that later.

if you can't think of anythign right now, then you really don't have a midlife crisis.
