I just found a good deal on a 7k miles(6k miles service done) s2r 800 dark in the craigslist. The guy said he would be willing to sell it for $5000(including delivery to my place which is 5 hours from it). I really don't have the time to travel and see it first since busy with school stuff. From the pictures he sent and some phone calls, the bike seems pretty good and the guy also seems nice. The main problem is I'm only 5' 2 [bang] and have try the 620 and fit pretty well. Is the s2r a lot bigger than the 620? The bike seems a bit long from the pictures so I'm assuming I will have to lean more forward on it. Anyone have any experience comparing this two bike in terms of riding position? I dont really care about the power because I know it would'nt be that different. I just like the styling of the s2r more than the 620. Right now, I am torn between the s2r and the 620 since the price is kinda similar. Someone gotta help me here.
What year is the s2r? It should blue book for about 6700. I've got an 06 for sale and most people seem to be offering me around 5k. Does the one on craigs list have any mods or aftermarket parts on it?
As far size, the s2r is taller for sure. I'm 5'8" and I have to tippy toe stop lights. I had previously lowered the bike, but It affected to handling way too negatively. I now have to bike at staock height in front, and the rear a smidgen above stock. I doubt they vary in wheel base though. I know there are other ways of dealing with height issues, including lower seats.
My wife is 5'4" and can't flat foot my 2007 S2R800. Seat height stock:
S2R800 - 31.5 inches
M620 - 30.3 inches
Now that I think about it I can almost put my foot completely flat.
Nice..Thanks for the fast reply guys [clap]
The s2r is the 2005 one and is basically stock. I know that I will not be able to flat foot both feet on it but I was wondering if the position of the handlebar is more forward than the 620. I was hoping the 1'' difference in height can be covered up using the 620 seat which is lower than the s2r seat.
I don't know for sure, but I don't think the handlebar of the S2R800 is more forward than the 620. A friend who used to have a 620 thinks my S2R800 handlebar feels higher than his 620, but not more forward.
first, i cant flatfoot my s2r1000. doesnt seem to be a huge problem, for me.
second, that sounds like to much cash for an 800 dark.
both are only my opinion of course
edit: also, even with the 6k service done, you will likely want to replace the belts first thing. depending on when it was done, they might not have been done at the 6k, but they are now due for sure based on age.
I think that is a good deal for an 05. But it seems like too much of a good deal for me.
Here is the Kelly blue book link.

Now granted it might not be worth the $6750. There might be a cushion in that figure but a $1750 margin for error or cushion seems a little excessive.
I have an 05 as well and would not sell it for $5000.
I would not buy anything off craigslist sight unseen. If you want it that bad go and take a look. Way too many scams on craigslist.
paid $7200 for my 2006 s2r (non-dark) 800 a little over a year ago.
$5000 for a DARK seems reasonable to me. the guy might need cash, and it's a tough market for selling toys right now.
i'd bring a buddy and go over the bike real thorough-like.
If you go through with it, I have a 620 seat I'll sell you...
And +1 on the going to look at it.
I've got an S2R 800 and used to have 695.
The 695 was definitely shorter height wise and when I didn't have handlebar risers, it did seem to sit a little different than the 800 but I'm not sure. I do know that I don't feel like I need the handlebar risers on the 800.
Since I'm 5'2" on a good day, I got the short seat to replace my stock one on the 800. It definitely makes a big difference but I can't even come close to flat footing and tippy toe most of the time. I'm pretty used to it now but I think eventually I will custom shave a seat and put in a gel pad to maybe get things a little shorter.
I had to practice a lot in parking lots to get comfortable with stopping. If the terrain is decent, I'll slide over to one side and put a whole foot down.
Allright guys.. Here's the link to the bike http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/1107101246.html (http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/1107101246.html)
Anyone here in St.Louis that have a spare time to check the bike out? I know the bike will be gone in a few days. Just want to keep my options open for now.
and also do you guys know where can I check the VIN# for a motorcycle online? It doesn't seems to show up on the carfax.
something is wrong... the r/h case cover is not the same color as the generator side..... ask why.

Lots of people paint that part so that the DUCATI stands out. I mean though, it looks only half done, but whatever!! [cheeky]
From the ad, it at least looks like a solid bike. Clear title is a plus!!!!
As for ride height, if you get the suspension adjuster it's no problem. My 620 had it on when I got it and it was pretty easy to raise up for my height (it was SO low when I got it that the previous owner must have been short).
Is the seller by any chance on the forum?
Ha, what a coincidence. I don't post much on the board since I don't own a monster anymore, but I browse G.M.F. and N.M.C. and read a few threads every once in a while, as this is by far one of the best moto forums around. Anyway, I made a point of clicking on this thread and reading to the end. I used to own a S2R Dark, it was a great bike and they will always have a special place in my heart. You know how it goes, if my ship ever comes in I'll make a point to buy another one, that sort of thing.
Well, when I got to the bottom of the thread, I noticed that the bike in question was apparently for sale in STL (huh, that's where my bike went...). After I clicked the Craigslist link I noticed that the bike had the "upgraded handlebars". '05 Darks came with a chrome/steel handlebar, not the Magura (I think that's how it's spelled) bar like all non-Dark S2R's. It also appears to have non-standard turn signals (hard to see in the Craigslist pics), and a chopped tail with a nice tail chop kit (also hard to see). Most importantly, the wet clutch cover and belt covers are blacked out, which was common on some Duc engines (695 I think) after '05, but was not factory on the '05 Dark. What this all adds up to is, I'm pretty sure you're thinking about buying my old bike. It looks quite a bit like this picture that I took before I sold it...

The Ducati Performance seat was added after I sold it, but I'd be interested to know where the other CRG mirror went, it used to have a Hindsight LS on one side, and a Blindsight on the other. Other than that it was a great bike that i really loved riding. I only sold it because I bought it brand new with very little down and a bad interest rate right after I got my first real job.

I guess I didn't say why I painted the clutch cover, but I had Dry clutch envy back then and was jealous of my buddies open clutch cover, so I removed the right side engine cover and had it blacked out, minus the DUCATI lettering. It's the same color as the belt covers, which were originally gray as well, but it's hard to tell from the guys pictures (the engine looks dirty). I wasn't sure what I'd be dealing with if I took the cover off the generator side, so I didn't mess with it, besides who looks at an S*R from the left... ;)
Is the s2r air-cooled or oil-cooled? I thought it was supposed to be air-cooled right..but it seems like it has a small radiator on it. What actually is that thing?

Its an oil cooler. Oil runs through it and the air cools it down.
Yup. So, it's actually air and oil cooled.
it is a air cooled engine
the engine's oil has a cooler
you can remove the oil cooler and the engine would be fine
Too bad the bike is gone now :( damn I was late [bang]
I wouldn't have called that a GREAT deal. It was OK, but the KBB value of that bike is WAY off IMO. That bike is 4 years old now and was I think 7250 brand new.
