I'm not sure if this should be general or no moto. I think more people might see it here.
I've been curious what it's like for a while now. My friend had a great job and quit to work as one of the ground crew at SF airport because it's something he's always wanted to try because he thought it would be fun. I've got a similar inkling about being a courier. I've been thinking that it could be fun for a while now but I don't know anyone that's done it.
So, if you've done it, what are your experiences like? Was it fun?
Not me, but I net a guy once who was a moto-courier. He started out liking to ride and having a motorcycle of his own and (most likely like you) just thought it would be a fun job. I met him about 4 years into it. He rode a company bike, had NO bikes of his own anymore and HATED to ride.
Riding is a great thing when you do it of your own will. It's quite another when you *have* to be across town in 22 minutes.
YMMV...
i was a bicycle messenger.
i loved it. i was outside all day, i didn't have someone over my shoulder telling me how i make the beast with two backsed up.i ate lunch when i wanted to, and worked for as long as i wanted to. i was in shape and loved the rush of riding a light frame through NYC traffic. i was gritty, i was grimy, and i smelled. people never knew what to think of me so they generally got out of my way.
the downside was that i had no medical insurance, the pay wasn't great, and if i didn't ride on the weekend monday was a pregnant dog. if you think people don't look for motorcycles then bicycles don't even exist to them. plus, it was much easier for someone to steal your method of conveyance and therefore take away your paycheck.
there were times when i would have preferred to be sitting at a desk, but if i had more money than i knew what to do with i would get good health ins and go right back to doing it. [thumbsup]
If'n yer doin it in socal better have really good insurance. :P
