I am in the DC area and am looking for a machinist to bore out my triple for an SBK fork conversion. I tried posting this up in CAM a few months ago and got no local recommendations. I have also tried getting referrals from local moto shops to no avail. Would be willing to ship my triple to a shop that has done this before for someone on the board.
I'm trying to do the same thing here in the Denver area. There are some promising leads, and if my triple turns out well, I'll post up the shop details.

Talk to Rick K. (http://mailto:editor@webbikeworld.com) for www.webBikeWorld.com (http://"http://www.webbikeworld.com"). He works in Gaithersburg and he might know someone who could do it. Tell him that I suggest that he asks some of the NIST machinist, who might be more than happy to do it afterhours for a few bucks (those machinist are some of the best I have ever seen).
Good luck, Pedro
i'd volunteer me, but I a) suck, and 2) work quite a long way away from DC.
the international shipping might be a killer [cheeky]
One of my best friends might be able to help. I gave him my stock triple to bore out to 53mm. Did a fantastic job. I just called him to see if he could do a couple of more for you guys. His shop is very busy. I should have an answer by tomorrow or Friday. BTW I live in NJ, so shipping shouldn't be too bad.

Awesome, thanks.
I tried Rick at web bike world and he responded super fast that he has no idea!
I called Donnie over at DucPond, and they have a machinist that will do it, but won't give me a price over the phone (understandably). I would like some idea of the price before I ship it out......
hey man, i didn't see your posts before
there is a machine shop i have used near ft belvoir.. the owner rides harleys and his brother (iirc?) has ducatis, and he likes this stuff.. i need to look up the name..
I spoke with my buddy last night, his shop is swamped right now w/ a new government contract (75% of their business comes from the local arsenal for US Army, which does weapons testing). Please be patient...I will post-up as soon as I have an answer. Worst case scenario, I will sell one of you guys my bored out triple (I went w/ a speedy moto piece over the winter) to get your project moving along.
What would you guys consider as a fair price for this work? I don't want any of the action and would prefer to have all of the $ go to my friend. I am willing to be a middle man to help out fellow DMF'ers and my buddy for zero $.
pm me if you wish.

I don't really have a concept. If it is more than $100 - $150, I'll buy the speedymoto piece as I already have some $$ in a second triple so I can have it bored and powedered without having my bike apart for weeks.
Don't know if you've seen this similar thread: http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=20611.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=20611.0)
Might find some leads there.

Thanks, I forgot about that post. Reading that info, I revise my cost downwards to $50 - $75! Now I just have to find someone to do it......
Well, I might have found someone to do the work, but it goes to show the cost of living in DC is HIGH! $95/hour minimum 2 hours. Turns out, Battleys Cycles has a machinist on staff. Any opinions on Battleys?

There's something to be said for being proud of your work, but i hope they offer you lube with that.
Exactly what I thought. DucPonds recommended machinist is $55/hour. I may keep searching.....
Sorry for the delay. Talked to my buddy. His shop is totally swamped with work and he can't do any side projects for the foreseeable future.
If anything changes I will post up.
As I mentioned in a previous machinist post, I'm a machinist. My electrician wired my lathe last weekend, TIG welder also, and this weekend the rest of the phase converter parts should be here and the mill will be going. I'll post up when everything is switched on and if you are willing to ship it out here, we'll fix it right up. And mods, let me know if this bit of advertising is a no-no and I'll delete it.
Thanks, Robert
Almost forgot. I'm in Santa Maria, CA, and I'll ship some nice weather in the box back to you.
Man I love this board! Thanks for the offer Corndog, but Hooligan Machinist beat you to it. Shipped the upper to TN yesterday. Price has yet to be determined completely, but let's just say I won't need the lube :o
Good going. I'm up and running, I don't have CNC capability yet, maybe in a year or so, so no big contouring operations, but for stuff like boring triples, making and changing out steering stems, adapting whatever you have to whatever you want to put it on, I can do it. PM me if you will give me a chance.
Thanks, Robert

It sounds like you might be the go-to-guy for welding cracked cases.
Are you going to convert your manual mill to CNC? Or buy another CNC mill? I've heard that it's a real job to convert say a Bridgeport to CNC. I have a manual lathe and mill and a surface grinder and a lot of other stuff but they're for my personal projects. I'm low on the learning curve and even though I have the machines I'm still a wannabe machinist.
Sorry for the thread jack but it seems like it's winding down anyway.
+1 for Hooligan Machinist. Got the bored triples this week and his price could not be beat! The trouble now will be finding the time to powder coat and install.

What the hell!? you're right down the road from me!

/more threadjack. During my career as a student I lived in Arroyo Grande. Was a nice area then although I haven't been back for years. Somewhere I still have a wooden nickel free drink token from R&D's if the place is still there.
Back on machine shop topic, there used to be a real blacksmith shop in AG where the guy would pound out red hot iron on an anvil just like the movies. I'd guess he's long gone by now and I don't think he'd bore triples anyway.
It takes a lot of experience to pound out some 53mm, nice round holes with a ballpeen hammer!!!
