Title: I'm thinking about getting my first Ducati
Post by: Shocker_1983 on April 07, 2009, 07:45:09 PM
Hello, I have some questions about a 2002 Ducati monster 620.  I figured you guys probably be the most helpful, so hopefully I'm not a pain.  Every 6,000 I need to get valve adjustment, now I'm learning little by little how to do things on my own, but how much typically does it cost to get it done, and is there anything else need to be done every 6,000?  How much does it cost to change a 15t sprocket to 14t sprocket? Someone says commuting in stop in go traffic the motorcycle will overheat, so how easly does that happen and how much does it cost to fix that problem?    what are the most common things that go out and what are typical cost?  It has 7,200 miles on it and it very clean looking.  The asking price is 3,900, so is that usually the price range.  I really like this bike, but I'm worried about getting something that I have to stick money after money in it.  I believe Ducati only makes quality bikes, but hopefully you can help me.

1. Valve adjustments on 2 valve motors like the 620 run anywhere from $300 to $700, depending on where you go. Check around at dealers in your area, or better yet, non-dealers with Duc experience.
2. Changing front sprockets is an excellent mod, and a relatively affordable one. Should be about $30 for the part, less than an hour of labor if you have the shop do it.
3. Overheating - where do you live? City or rural? what state? These motors can overheat, but if you're paying attention, you'll pull over and cool it down before that happens. However, if it consistently runs hot, the oil will degrade quickly and the engine will get unnecessary wear and tear. Do you plan on commuting on the thing? You could probably add an oil cooler - I know you can for my 696. The part for the 696 is about $500, plus a couple hours labor if the shop installs it.
4. Most common to go out? Tires, especially back ones  [laugh]. If well-maintained, these tend to be reliable motors. There are exceptions, but those tend to be individual bikes, not the rule.
5. Price seems reasonable to me.

Thank you very much!

I Live in Madison WI, I read on a forum about overheating in stop in go traffic, and I guess I'll get stuck in it once an while.  I was just curious if they overheat easy, or just like any other bike.  I understand that every bike will have its own problems or hopefully not, but I guess on typical things what are the prices.  Like If I had a typical bike and some part cost 100.00, what would it cost on A ducati.  I imagine parts are a little more pricey than say a part on honda shadow or something like that.  Once again thank you.

if it helps, my friend purchased a 750 and the PO sent me the service records.

his last valve adjustment, and various engine gaskets and O rings came to $330.

YMMV

Parts from the dealer will be expensive. If you need OEM parts look on this board to see what people are selling or ebay. For example my friend needed a new lever for his Yamaha. He went to the dealer and got one for 18 dollars. I needed a lever for my S2R1K and the dealer wanted 120 dollars. I went on line and got two Pazzo levers for 180. Was better then 120 for one OEM lever.

You can find most parts fairly cheap on this board and others on the net.

I never had a problem overheating with my 620, even on 105f+ days.  It would get hot, but not overheat.

As for parts cost in comparison, it depends on what, and where you get it from. Luckily with a monster you have a huge secondary parts market. Parts are constantly upgraded, and most people sell their replacements. If you buy from the dealer though, prepare to pay an exorbitant amount. But most maintenance parts such as chains, sprockets, oil and air filters are about comparable if purchased aftermarket.

I purchased a 2002 620 last october, it had 4800 miles on it............it now has 7780ish (I paid $3400 for it)

I took in for it's 6000 mile service in Feb and it cost me about $550, it included changing the belt, oil and a few other adjustments (no valve adjustment) and bleeding the clutch

I had a nice long discussion with the service mgr about valves since it would cost quite a bit more (probably in the 700ish range)

he told me that the 620s due to their smaller engines didn't always need valve work at 6000 miles, but  promised to give bike a nice thorough check over and would let me know IF he thought I should have it done (Obviously I understand the risk)

He also said the biggest concern was the belt.......apparently it is a really bad thing if it breaks, so it had to be replaced!

it will probably cost around $200 to change the sprocket (quote I was given)

I live in Texas (see HOT) and I commute with mine, I'm yet to have an issue with overheating

Only issue I had was an air bubble in the clutch reservior which caused the clutch to fail..........I had it bled and it fixed the issue

Hope this helps

Change the belts.

look for oil leaks on the vertical cylandir. I have a 2002 750 and they are known for the oil leak there. Yep mine has it. Youll see the oil in the resoviors below the fins.

If it helps your decision, we bought a 2005 620 from a forum member for my wife.   She's had it on the track twice.   When I ride it I beat the snot out of it...redline shifts all the time...full throttle to full brakes all the time...clutched wheelies (shhhhh...don't tell Gwendy).....it's been dropped at low/no speed by her a few times....the thing is a pack mule of a bike...I don't think we could kill it.

My rs takes a little more work to keep it "sharp"....brake fluid changes more frequently to keep the one finger brakes etc....stuff the 620 doesn't notice because it's not as sharp to begin with (not a slam).

Just stay away from the UW traffic and you'll be fine ;)  (I live down in Janesville).  You shouldn't have too many problems with overheating, but if you are really worried about it, just shut off the bike if you are stuck in traffic for a long time.  Welcome to the DMF [thumbsup]

could always put an oil cooler on it too.

I've always wondered how much cooling that little cooler actually helps.  Doesn't seem like it would provide a ton of cooling considering it's size, but I could be wrong.

I believe its 10% or so. If I remember correctly, some people with 695s on the old board installed them to take care of the overheating issues those bikes were having and got them down to around 250 as opposed to close to 300 degree oil temps. I almost installed one on my 695 for the same reason before I upgraded.

But I could be wrong and I lived in a state with really hot weather.

I have a cooler on my 750. The hottest I've seen my temp was 225, and that was stopped on the freeway in the summer.

My 600ss came with no cooler, but has the tap locations for it (same crankcase as the 620).  I used a dipstick thermometer and got a peak of 220 after riding around the beltway on an 80 degree day.  I put a SMALL oil cooler on it, made by Setrab and did the same track and got a peak of 190.  This cooler has about a 0.1 L capacity and I think the factory coolers have a 0.3 L..  Setrab states the small ones have about a 6500-9000 btu/hr cooling capacity.

my 750 dark has an oil cooler. are these standard on 750 or was it added by the bike's previous owner?

750s had them factory

everything over 700cc seems to have them.

The oil coolers only help marginally. They're better than nothing but they need wind blowing through them. In stop & go traffic the benefit is miniscule. A friend & I installed one on his 620 a couple of years ago thinking it would help cooling a lot more than it really did. The ambient air temperature has a far greater effect on the cooling than the oil cooler does.
