Title: HOLY COW Bubbling Paint around my fuel filler cap HELP ???
Post by: EGAS1 on April 08, 2009, 05:32:09 PM
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen or similar? I went up to the shed the other night and Holy cow   :o
I have bubbled paint around the fuel filler? I am always very careful with fuel when filling, never wipe the paint work with anything other than clean polishing cloths.

I took off the filler cap and found that the paint has bubbled inside the fuel chamber and has slowly worked its way up to the outside duco, what to do? short of getting it re painted?

loss of adhesion can't be fixed except by removing the bad and replacing with new.

Sorry.

Is your cap seal leaking?

Not sure, and would that be an issue seeing as it has started to bubble under the fuel cap in the area where the actual hole is in the tank?

Under normal conditions properly cured well adhered paint won't bubble from gas.

From your description it sounds like the cap was the catalyst. The issue is poor adhesion.

Thanks Ducpainter,

I was advised to pop this thread up on the main board as I did just post it on the OZ monster site initially. So I do appreciate your advice...........................so does this mean a total respray on the tank or can we get away with a part spray and blend?

That would be up to your painter and what he finds for adhesion as he feathers the edges of the bubbling paint.

It also depends on the peeling. Is it peeling/bubbling to bare metal, or to the primer?

If it was peeling to metal I'd be inclined to sandblast the entire tank and start over. If it's peeling to primer I'd spend some time to see if it could be saved.

It's sometimes faster to just start over.

Hard to tell the extent of this without a picture but it sounds like the bubbled paint won't slow it down much.  :)  I think if it were my tank, I'd just carefully and lightly sand and clean up the bubbled area and seal it with some two-part epoxy primer, using a small artist brush or a Q-tip and then just ride the thing.  Maybe consider re-painting it later or if I wanted to sell it.

My S4 is doing it too ,, 2nd respray its a common problem ,Gasohol is the culprit ,regular gas does not cause the problem.
