Title: 696 won't start right away Post by: Duki09 on April 11, 2009, 07:05:58 PM The weather here around Phoenix isn't cold, but my new 2009 Monster 696 is hard to start after it has been sitting for a few hours even when the outside temps were 70-80 degrees. I have to start it while either giving it some throttle or set the idle lever on high for a minute. If I don't the engine will cut off out if I just try to start it and take off.
After the bike is running a minute or two, it runs just fine. Is there a problem with my 696 if the engine needs to be warmed up a little even in moderately warm weather? If your bike is new, it will probably get better after it is broken in a bit more.

If your bike is new, it will probably get better after it is broken in a bit more. I thought the fast idle lever was there for cold weather starts. Is 70- 80 degrees considered cold? Well, maybe in AZ where the temps are over 100 half of the year, but c'mon. Hopefully it is just needs to be broken in more like you mentioned. It only has about 400 miles on it. It'll need a little help most of the time, but should warm up pretty quickly. If you don't need the lever turned very far you should be able to start riding and turn it off after a couple minutes.

If the bike is cold it will not run very nicely until there is some amount of heat in the motor. If you have not had your 600 mile service yet, they sync the throttles and change to synthetic oil during that service. Trust me, until you reach 2000 miles the bike will not feel broken in. That's when the bike finally felt perfect for me.

The explanation I've always heard -- for any brand-new or newly rebuilt motor, not just Ducs -- is that a certain, very tiny amount of wear in the first hundred or two miles is a good thing, allowing the moving parts to fully match up with one another. Full synth oil supposedly inhibits the desired breaking in during the "break in" period. |
