How much riding experience do you have?

How damaged is the bike? Got a picture of the damage?

Jump on it.
At $1200, if it's too damaged to restore, you can make a profit selling parts. It is NOT hard to scavenge $1200 worth of parts off of a monster.

+1.  Assuming the engine is good, and a couple other parts, you could recoup your $1200 if the idea of a rebuild fades.

Make sure it is legit - not stolen, and not a scam.

At 19, you should also be fully aware of the maintenance costs of owning a bike like this.
it will nickle and dime you constantly, so be prepared.
what is the mileage on the bike? if it is near 6000 miles, or 12000 miles, or any other multiple of 6000 miles, it will be needing a valve service soon. that will run you some decent cash. probably ~$350 - $500, depending on your location.

[laugh] [laugh] [laugh] What Ducati actually has 12,000 or more miles on it?!   [roll]

Ha!!  Just as I thought..only 4400miles!

Lazy..seriously think about how much it will cost also to insure this bike.  I know most 19 y/o pay a sh*tload on insurance..especially if you already have a ticket or two!

BTW..nice thread title.

It'll be a shit ton cheaper to insure than an R6-Gixxer-ZX anything, it's a naked "standard" bike. Granted I'm not 19yr (I'm 33) I do have at least 1 speeding ticket, I carry uninsured and medical(nothing more than liability on the bike, it's not worth the premium if you're good with your hands), I pay $140 a year.

Do you have tools and a place to work on it?  I can't think of a good reason not to go for it.  Sounds like a great project.   Everyone should have a project bike to work on.  Like has already been said, if it doesn't work out the way you want it to, you can re-sell it or sell the parts and get your money back out of it.

Also, if it has been hit, take a good look at the frame and look for cracked or broken welds, or bent tubes. May even be able to see a bent frame if it was hit right. And make sure the seller starts it up for you. Low miles, so they would have really had to try hard to f-up the engine, but it's possible.

Like said before, even if the frame is screwed, you could part out the bike to get back the cost of buying it.

Take a few good (REALLY good) pics when you check it out and post them here, and we can help determine if it is usable or salvagable.

^^^^^^ good points. An easy way to spot frame damage is to look for flaking paint.

Let's see...  *glances over at M750 in the garge[i/] I've got 31,000 on my M750, my 900SS just turned over 12,000 too  [laugh]

The 900 is a hell of a motor IMO.  Despite having owned a GSXR600, GS1150ES (fast as hell, but will kill you even faster), and the M750, the 900 really has the potential to do some serious damage with an unruly clutch or throttle hand.  That in mind...  If I was the one that found a somewhat banged up M900 for $1200?  If I found no frame damage, I'd take it.  Fix & sell or ride. Not a good first bike if you're looking at it as a "fixer-upper" first bike.

+1 the 900 is a great freaking bike. I had a 2001 900S Monster.  AND the 2001 is fuel injected.  [thumbsup] ( The older carburetor versions were a little more tricky I hear, and not as responsive.)

+1 my 848 - less than a year - has 7300 miles on it.  ;)

lazyboy,

I have a feeling that being SPRING, you want to RIDE a bike, not have an endless project. That sounds like a summer of e-bay nightmare to me.

HERE:
Beautiful bike, loads of gear to go with. Engineer selling it with Nicols upgrades. (that means he knows his sh*t and prolly took exceptional care of it.)

and he's a fast learner!   ;)

Yes, that's a lot for a Duc.  Most you'll find the are for sale have only a couple K's on them.  You'll find that a fair amount of people on here actually get some good mileage.

What's Norm up to nowadays?  He must be getting close to 200,000?!

I'd be well into the 100's had I not run over so many friggen nailz!  [thumbsup]
