Title: Thinking about pulling the trigger...
Post by: ZLTFUL on April 17, 2009, 03:02:06 PM
Well, it's been several years since my last track days. I was never really into it because i was one of the very few local riders and had to drive 9 hours round trip to the nearest decent motorcycle road course.

In the last couple of years, I have begun to ride with a group that not only street rides but does every track day they can get their paws on. Couple that with now having 2 tracks within 1.5 hours drive of here and I am getting the itch again.
One of the locals announced that he had purchased a 636 for track days and was going to be selling his 2000 GSXR750 for dirt cheap. This includes all of the goodies like woodcraft clipons and rearsets, penske rear shock, race tech massaged forks, suspension set up for 10 lbs lighter than I currently am (but is also where my weightloss goals are with my training). He is throwing in a couple of pairs of Diablo Corsa 3s as well as the 1 track day old set on the bike, an extra set of wheels and any of the stock bits he has lying around.

The price is impossibly good and I am seriously on the verge of pulling the trigger...in fact I already sent him a text message making him an offer.
If he accepts, I may have to hold on to my giant gas guzzling pickup a while longer to haul my track bike to the track...

Anyway, just wanted to share...

as i'm sure you know, the 750 is the "perfect" track bike, depending on who you ask.  certainly not the bike to start racing on, but if you're a sane human with a healthy respect for the throttle, it's a great bike.  and buying one all sorted is, of course, the way to go.

my mental model year info on those bikes only goes back to '04 so i can't talk about that particular one... but, ah screw it, just buy the damn thing.

:)

No advice here - just wondering what 2 tracks at 1.5 hours?

Hope it works out.  Getting a track bike is totally liberating.  Track riding seems like such a logistical/expensive PITA until you finally pony up and get a dedicated bike.  Then you immediately become a junkie.   ;D

NESBA has at least one date at Newton this year and MAM is an hour and a half away for me...and NESBA as well as a couple of other groups have days booked there...

And then if I want to drive a bit there's always *deep breath* RA, ACC (Joliet), Putnam, Heartland Park, Brainerd...

MAM is a blast and Trackaddix has several days there. The other tracks mentioned are all worth it too. If you make the long haul and go to Road America or BIR, it is well worth the trip. BIR has a new short course layout that is another option to run...it is amazing! If you come up to BIR, look me up first.

My only complaint about MAM is the lack of elevation changes...but that's just me hehe.

Got the bike home last nigt. I forgot how scary fast these UJM inline 4s can be. I need to make some adjustments. Previous owner was slightly taller than me but around the same weight. Adjustments aren't going to be a problem...the rearsets have about 78295095095095095095095095078 adjustments that can be made while the clipons have some nice adjustments.

I also want to replace the stock screen with a double bubble one...fortunately, my roommates 01 1000 has one on it and he hates them. If I buy a regular tinted screen he said he would trade me...

Will get some over the next day or two. Need to get the garage organized so I can get all 4 bikes in there without major clearance issues.
