Title: did my first track day...........................!!!!
Post by: That Nice Guy Beck! on April 19, 2009, 08:09:59 AM
with my BMW  [evil] [beer]

I had so much friggin fun yesterday, went in with the novice class, we learned proper lines and looking thru the turns very similar to motorcycle riding.
first time out I went with my buddy in the passenger seat, should of went with teh instructor lol,I spun out on one of the turns!! that was scary to say the least.
second time out the instructor came with me and was telling me how to take the corners and how to brake etc etc, man by the end of the day I hit 145 on the straight
and was taking corners at 80 mph, what a rush it was, like sex but it never ended!
I was in elkhart lake wisconsin at road america, amazing track, lots of sick cars, m6's, m3's porsches, firebirds, mustangs ,vipers, nissan gtrs  [bow_down]
im doing 135 on teh straight I give the pass signal to a z06 and the fkin guy passed me like i was parked  [popcorn]

the bmw..

was unreal thank god for the germans, brakes never failed me through out the day, after being totally abused all day the turbos never got to hot, car ran 100% like a beast till the very end, even the instructor took my car for a few laps and the whole time he was just yelling out "this car is incredible wow" he said he's buying one lol
5 runs for the day with 2 class rooms $280 1 corvette hit the wall with a passenger they both went to the hospital I hope they are ok  :-\

if anything it taught me alot about the track enviorment to prep me for when I decide to take a motorcycle track day with NESBA

all in all what a day had a blast, anyone run on a track??

Beware...

As surely as cocaine leads to crack, track days lead to racing  ;D

Good for you for actually taking your sports car out on a track and taking it to it's (and your) limits.

Do as I say , not as I do .....................SPEED KILLS !

Have you ever asked yourself where this will all lead you ?

If you want to be a Professional Driver , then I guess you are on the right track.

If you just need to go faster and faster and have the rushes be bigger and longer I see a missed corner or a wall in your future.

Speed and Adrenaline are as dangerous as smoking Pot , snorting Cocaine and finally going for the biggest and longest high...SMACK.

I love speed. I love to go fast , especially on curvy roads in the "hills."

If I keep it up I will end up dead.

If I was on a track I would eventually be that guy who misses a corner , or hits a wall ...because I've got to be 1st.

At least in the " hills " I'm only racing against myself.  Dolph

Huh?

At a trackday you are also only racing against yourself. There are also emergency services there in case anything does go wrong. There is also a clean surface without debris or distractions. It is an infinitely safer environment than in the "hills".

Professional Drivers and Riders die in single vehicle crashes at tracks.    Dolph

Please point out where I said no one dies at tracks.

That said...it is extremely rare outside of racing (where it is also rare). Many more die on the street, driving as if they were on the track.

I also don't care what you do in your spare time. But trying to convince someone that the street is safer that the track is silly and irresponsible.

Yes I agree, but which % do you think Beck falls into.

The % that drive sanely and never take it beyond a day at the track.

I think from his current and previous posts that he is the type of person who needs bigger and bigger thrills.

I think I see a lot of my traits in him and I just know I would be pushing the fun factor to the max and usually at the far right hand side of the fun factor gauge is a crash.   Dolph

I had a blast and everyone there was respectful.

these were not timed races
in the novice group you pretty much were alone the hole time maybe seeing one car which was awesome
sorry but i would never hit 145 mph breaking before a corner and then taking teh corner at 80 mph on the hills LOL
even when in my teens

I did my first track day last August with the ACNA at Road America.  It was a TON of fun.

I can't believe that they let a first-timer like you take some laps without an instructor in the car.  That's a real surprise.  At the ACNA event, there was no way in hell that they'd let a first-timer on the track without an instructor - even during the last sessions of the driving school.

can i run my Tahoe? i can safety wire the drain plug.

No way will they let you bring a street truck onto the track, least of all a fat slug like a Tahoe.  They're way too slow and the rollover risk is just too high.  Generally speaking, even the Porsche, BMW, and Audi clubs won't allow owners of their respective SUVs onto the track for club events.

Anyway Beck, I understand how you can get addicted to that deal.  Road America is a terrific track, and I'm dyin' to go back.  [evil]

Did you stay at Siebken's hotel?  That's a classic place to stay, and the bar is a fun place to hang out.   [thumbsup]

Dolph, you are right that there are certain traits to people that make them want to try the more and more thrills till,

1, they get really good and make a profession of it, whatever that is, be it a good or bad thing.
2. push it too far and possibly get injured and never do that again.
3. push it too far and not get hurt too bad and keep pushing even more later.
4. push it too far and not get hurt too bad and stop pushing past that limit.
5. push it and nothing bad happens, they are just that good and live a charmed life.

which one it ends up being, nobody knows till it happens.  he has to figure that out on his own.

i would rather him do this on a track and possibly only hurt himself rather than the possiblity on the streets of hurting not only himself but another person that "didn't know it was unofficial track day" at the local residential road or "hills" when he pushed it too much.  afterall blind turns are called that for a reason, you don't know what is around the next turn for sure.

if you are going to push the limits do it on the track so that the only people you may possibly hurt will be yourself and other people that assume the risk of going fast on a track at the same time as you, if i don't want to assume that risk i don't go to that track with the person, i only assume the risk of normal driving on the public raods not track racing speeds..

Sounds like this track event was, ah, loosely policed.  [laugh]  Hope nobody got seriously hurt in either the Viper or Corvette wreck.  Glad you didn't wad up your Bimmer on your first laps, either.

Who sponsored this event at Road America?  Was it a car owners' club event (porsche, BMW, etc.)?   Was the track wet or something?  Seems like a lot of 'incidents'.

A Viper would be fun, but also a handful at RA.  It's a high-horsepower track, so I can only imagine what his top speeds were (likely 160+, if he stayed in the gas all the way down the main straight).  I also know the Kink - when I was on track last summer, I was typically coming out of the Carousel and entering the Kink at 95mph, with my right foot firmly planted.  ;D   I didn't have the stomach (or horsepower) to push much faster on all-season tires.   [laugh]

it was one of the best times i've had... huge grin  ;D

the track day was one of the best presents i ever got,
although it probably took a year off the life of the audi.

Riding with a really talented/experienced driver can be a revelation.  My instructor only drove my car for one lap - mostly to show the correct lines around the track.  He didn't push the car hard at all so it was up to me to discover my car's (and my own) limits  [evil].  I was a frequent passenger in instructors' cars, though.  My driving school instructor could haul ass with his personal 350Z, and my good friend (also a driving instructor) took me on track at Road America in his Carrera S.  An attentive passenger can learn a lot - I know that my cornering lines and braking strategies improved greatly after I was able to watch experienced drivers at work.   ;D

Your typical insurance might cover track-related damage at a high-performance driving school, but it's unlikely (see link below).

The best plan (if you're worried about wadding up your Bimmer) is to buy a track-day insurance policy.  I could've bought one last summer for my track days -- I can't remember exactly what they were asking for 2 days' coverage - something around $250 I believe.  I could look into it, if you're really curious.

This is NYT article about track-day insurance may be helpful for you:

When you sign up for your next track day, ask the sponsoring organization how you can buy track-day coverage.  They'll have an option for you.  [thumbsup]

Did you read that article?  I laughed when that guy said his insurance policy was 'unexpectedly canceled' after he inquired about track-day coverage.   [laugh]  Even that insurance agent was surprised - he'd done 40 track days in his NSX and then realized that he wasn't covered.  [laugh]

It's pretty clear that companies like State Farm, Progressive, USAA, etc. won't cover your car when it's on the track.

With that in mind , I doubt Insurance Companies are going to cover damage at a Track on your Bike under your regular Policy.

I'm surprised they even cover medical bills if you crash while speeding on the street if you get cited for Failure to Control or Speeding.

Insurance Companies are in business to MAKE $$$ , not pay for us to go have fun speeding and then bin our rides whether it be on a track or on the street.   Dolph

Call state farm they cover your bike if you go to a track.

And i don't see why people are getting their panties in a bunch about Beck tracking his car.  I'm one for speed and thrills myself  and will be doing my first track day soon on my motorcycle but i see myself keeping it under control and within my limits.  I say good for him that he has a safe place were he can do this and keep it off the street.  Personally i think the track is a great place to get your thrills and that a lot of people can understand the implications of a high speed crash and keep a level head.  You are not racing so it's just you and the bike perfecting your lines, braking etc.

He got some nice shots of your car in the corners, but it is too bad he didn't for some of the other cars.  Too many straight on shots.

It is cool seeing cars with full body roll and even some daylight under that front inner tire.
