Title: 2007 S4RS Rear Height Adjuster
Post by: Tigermeat on April 20, 2009, 01:06:13 AM
Hi All,

Recently bought this bike and the previous owner was height challenged and has it as low as he could get it.  I'm just under 6'2" so I need to bring the bike up for comfort and to (hopefully) improve the turn-in which is near horrible now.

Owners manual says the eye-eye should not exceed 272 mm but it doesn't give the factory setting or any other guidelines.  Can anyone tell me the factory setup or better yet a setting for my height?  I've read all the threads I could find and I gather this isn't much fun so I'd like to get as close as possible on the first try.

Thanks all for your help.  The monster forum is the bomb! 8)

Monsters come from the factory with the ride height rod fully collapsed giving the lowest ride height setting. I believe the maximum number of threads showing on the adjuster rod should be 5. This number, (someone double check me on this) is for the S2R1000 and I believe is listed in the owners manual. I would imagine the setup is the same though on the S4R. I adjusted mine out to 3 threads showing. I am not sure what the eye to eye measurement changed to though. The best thing to do is adjust it some and see how it feels. If you think you need a bit more, then adjust it more and ride it again to see if you like the new setting better. Remember to set your sag up correctly as well. If you are heavier than the last guy, the rear sag could be too much making the bike low in the rear. I would say to set the sag, then play with the rear ride height. Once you have the ride height diled in how you like it, double check the sag again as it may change based on how much you increase the ride height.

It says 5 threads max in my s2r 800 manual. It also says 261mm is nominal and 272 max, which I believe both numbers to be wrong. IIRC even with both bolt screws all the way into the rod it already measured close to or over 272mm, then at five threads out it was close to 290 something.

I would also start with three threads first then go from there. Little adjustments on that hieght rod make a big difference in handling.

IIRC ride-height adjustments are also exponential as far as the height goes.  Meaning that three threads out doesn't result in simply three times the increase of what one thread out does.  The change in height each thread accounts for is greater as more threads are exposed.  That is how it was explained to me, so someone correct me if I am misquoting.

^ sounds right. Adjust a little, height moves a lot.

Thanks All,

The previous owner was about the same weight as I and meticulous about the bike.  We discussed sag & compared weight assuming that should remain the same.  I know when I bring the height adjuster up I'll have to re-check the sag but hope to check the sag (including static) after I put the new silencers on.

The feedback has been great.  I'll run it out to three threads, install the new silencers & then work through the sag.  That should be a good starting point for ride evaluation.
