Hey I'm checking out a S2R on Craigslist and the owner has emailed me back but I'm starting to wonder about the condition of the bike. The title is clean but it was tipped over, there are some scratches on the front fairing and the clutch cover.
The other issue though is that he said the handlebars are able to touch the gastank and have marked up the gastank. His words are that there are no dents but marks, and that he can't tell if the handlebars are bent. Apparently he had the stops adjusted but they are still touching.
This bike is a 2 hour drive for me to check out in person and I hate to waste my time driving down there to find out its got some serious issues. I was going to e-mail him back some more questions. Anyone have any insight?
It might be worth it to check it out. I bought ,and probably most people on here who bought used, my bike with an actual dent from the handlebars in the tank. It doesn't take much to get the handlebars to hit the tank and it is a pretty common occurence. What you do want to look at are the tabs by the forks. If they are bent or broken then the bike is usually totaled. I'm sure others can give you a way more detailed explanations but go check the bike out and get a better picure of what is damaged.
the bars touching the tank could be due to the issues the plastic tank seem to be having (assuming its a plastic tank...)
Actually its an 2005, I think those still have the metal gastanks.
i am interested in the tabs on the forks being bent? What tabs and where are they?
Plastic gas tank hits because it's wider. My Dark S2R hits, but I don't give a make the beast with two backs since it's a dark. It adds character. It's an 05, but I think only the darks came with the plastic tank.
Just figured out it is the Dark version... :-\ The owner purchased a front fairing for it so that threw me. Besides lacking the front fairing, and the steel handlebars are there any other differences in the Dark version?

refers to the tabs which stop the triple from turning past a certain point

05's have both metal and plastic tanks.
Just picked up an '06 S2R 1000. Turn the bars left and the triple will touch the tank, right, plenty of clearance. The bike is spotless and has never been down.
check the steering stops and the bolts for them to see if they are even. also if you can, measure the bars to see if they are straight.
Something you might want to check for on the S2R.
A lot of guys turned the handlebars upside-down for a slightly sportier riding position. If this was ever done, there's a good chance that it is causing the bars to contact the tank.
I did it on my S2R for a brief time, and the bars definitely hit the tank from being upside down.
Mine has different bars than this one, as it's not a Dark, but it's a possibility...
Thanks for the tip on the stops. I adjusted the one on the left....Mucho better!
