Title: 620 to GT1000 - anyone?
Post by: velocipede on April 21, 2009, 12:06:05 PM
I''ve found an awesome deal on a 2007 GT1000 and, since this is Monster board and I've got a Monster, was curious if anyone had made a similar move (620 to GT1000 in my case) and could provide any insight as to what sort of differences to expect.  I realize the Sport 1000 is going to be a good bit more powerful, but I'm also curious if anyone has any feedback on handling differences, etc.  I've always really like the sport 1000 line, and the GT would be a better 2-up ride than the 620, so it seems like a good idea.

The seat is a good bit different, I find it uncomfortable, make sure you sit on it.  The handing I have no FHE on.

Why would the Sport 1000 be faster than the GT? Its the same engine, same transmission, and same final drive ratio. Or did you mean faster than the 620?

But yeah, I went from an '03 620 to an '06 Sport 1000. The biggest difference is, as you mentioned, the power available. The DS1000 engine just pulls like a freight train. Its still very linear and manageable, but you have to keep in mind just how much torque you've got at your disposal.

The other thing you'll probably notice is that the front brake calipers are not quite as enthusiastic as the ones on your Monster. At least, I noticed that. They're still entirely adequate, but you will likely notice the difference.

As far as handling goes, they're very stable. Those heavy-ass rims are good for that. The handling is still very precise and feedback is good, but its not what you'd call "flickable." Its wonderfully responsive, but requires deliberate input.

As JM mentioned, the ergos are going to be different, so at least go sit on the thing before you make the leap. I've never sat on a GT, so I can't help you there.

Yeah, I guess I was a little unclear...I meant the GT would have more power than the 620.  Unfortunately  can't sit on the bike before I buy it, since the owner is about 13 hours away (going to have the bike shipped).  The local Duc dealer doens't have any GTs in stock, just a Sport Classic, and it seems OK as far as seat height.

ok confused.
is it a Gt1000 or a sport 1000 you are looking at.
sat on the sport 1000... way agressive, like an old SS.
the GT1000 looked kinda like my old monster city in layout.

i also went from a 620 to the 1000ds engine. as obsessed said, its a bit more power, but very manageable.
as for the brakes.....they were good enough to keep him from kissing my tailchop last summer....

No no, my friend. That was the precise but deliberate handling.

I'm looking at getting the GT, just to clear it up.  I think of them as just part of the "Sport Classic" line, sorry if that wasn't clear.  The (non-GT) Sport Classic is what I checked out at a local dealer, just to see how the height of the bike fit.  Haven't been able to check out a GT anywhere around here, though.  I think they're all beautiful bikes, but the GT seems far more ergonomic for everyday riding, which is what I'd be using it for.

Locked up the back. Front was still good. Steered me around you. Scared the living bejeezus out of Emily, too. She saw the whole thing from the car.
