Just an hour after riding onto the circuit for the first time, Ben Spies has already established himself as the early man to beat around Assen as the fourth round of the World Superbike Championship got underway with opening free practice.

The American rider has had nothing more than computer games to aid his cause in the run up to the Dutch event, but he wasted no time in getting to grips with the circuit as he emerged a sizeable four tenths up on his nearest rival.

What is Haga's problem with Assen?

I suspect most folks are more excited about WSBK. Haga? Don't worry. It's early and race day is what counts.

Its normal to feel that way when one of your countrymen is at the front of the pack, I love both series but at the moment Moto GP is still more exciting for me, Casey being an Aussie and all [thumbsup]

Race one was awesome. Great finish.

I just started watching WSBK last year and this year is much better.

Race 2  [bang]

I hope nobody got hit by any flying parts. The bike jumped over the wall at the very end. Crazy.

do yourself a favor and go back and watch the full seasons you missed from about 1996 or so on.

especially the british and japanese rounds (strongest wildcards) and the edwards/bayliss seasons.

Yep, race 1 was one of the best races I have ever watched.

Didn't see the bike flip - do you mean Ben's bike or someone else?  There were several bad get-offs.

And from this afternoon I started to love Ben Spies.

many moments like this to refer to but you should watch the last AMA superbike race of 2007 (@ laguna).

and don't worry, he'll get this new-bikeyness under control and stop doing things like clipping the grass entering corners  >:(

I totally respect spies and his talent, but I swear to god the speed announcers act like they want to have his babies!!  For every one time they mention haga (the points leader),  they spend five minutes drooling over spies.  Maybe it's just me, but it's driving me nutty!

people don't come in from smaller, national series and do what he's doing in wsbk.  it's unprecedented.

he 'ought' to be performing about like shane byrne.

....and jonathan greene has some sort of connection to texas, so i s'pose he's predisposed somewhat.  however there's also not been an american pulling any weight in this series since 2002.

(and 4 out of 4 poles will get you a lot of superlatives)

Yeah, my buddy has been watching WSBK, AMA and GP as long back as I can remember. I was hearing about Rossi when he was racing 250's. I didn't start watching GP until 2004? I think that was Rossi's last year on the Honda. Or his first year on the Yamaha. Whatever year it was, I saw the second half of his last year on the Honda. Watching racing is what made me buy my Monster.

It's nice to see Spies do so well in WSBK. I couldn't stand watching AMA last year. I hope Hopkins gets a chance to do well.

Race 1 was make the beast with two backsing awesome.   [thumbsup]  Spies and Haslem are nuts.  Totally nuts.  And after the race they were both like "yeah, that was fun close racing."  Close?!?  I think they ended up wearing each other's underwear.  That's more than just close.

Spies is a monster.   With two laps left in Race 1, I just keeping thinking about Road Atlanta last year.   I was so upset when he went down in Race 2.  I shut off the TV.  'course, I turned it back on about 10 mins later and kept watching.   ;D

So far this year, Haga is putting on a Rossi-like clinic -- doesn't always win, but always podiums and is starting to just run away with the points.  He's been ungodly consistent.  It's scary.  Can he get on the podum in every race this year?  Can he go all year without a DNF?  I'm pretty sure the answer to both is no, but at some point, we gotta start asking those questions.  I gotta admit though, I cheer for Ben over Nori.  And now, I cheer for people to beat Nori just so that the points get closer between them.  He looks so much better on that Duc.  He still slides it around, but nowhere near like he used to.

I've also become a Haslem fan.  He's great.  And I like his girl's boobies.   ;D

Fabrizio, Fabrizio, Fabrizio . . . . <sigh>

I am extremely surprised that Haslam was able to perform so well while dragging the mouths of the Eurosport commentators on his dick the whole way. It was cute the first 5 minutes, by the end of the second race I was about ready to chuck something at my computer.

You've got to give them a break, Leon Haslam comes from the equivalent of bike racing royalty in the UK and his family is well regarded and loved. James Whitham is close friends with Ron. This combined with him being on a minor privateer bike running 3rd in the championship makes the comments understandable.

It's not as bad as the Ben Spies & World Superbike show on speed.

Go Leon!! ;)

She is Leon's fiance'.  I hear the ratio of her talent to the size of the rock on her finger is 2:1  ;D

I respect Spies' talent, but I am pulling for Haga all the way.  I can't support him having this much success immediately, it is not natural.

This circuit constantly produces great racing.  Remember the '08 Supersport race?  If you have not seen it you have a homework assignment.  A pack of fifteen...yes fifteen were dicing for podium positions.

Haga sliding it around?  I thought he looked remarkably smooth.  I did not see his bike so much as twitch!  He has the Duc set up just like his old Yammys, and taking lines that other riders won't touch.

Inmake the beast with two backsingcredible moves Ben used to get to the front in Race 1, hard to watch, but amazing!

I make a motion to hold all rounds in all classes at Assen.  Just an amazing track that has produced spectacular racing for the 3 yrs I have been watching.
