What do you experts recommend to keep my bike up right and off the front tire for fork removal?
I'm still new to the bike stuff.. Thanks guys.
Why you might ask. I'm really thinking about sending off my 696 forks for a "performance" rebuild.
You'll need a rear stand and a floor jack. Most people jack the fron from under the horizontal header pipe.
I always thought a frame like this to lift the bike would be the best for removing forks:

You could probably build that for less than the price of a rear stand. [laugh]
You can also use a front stand that lifts from the lower triple steering stem.

That's a great looking and inexpensive lift system! The ratchet straps were probably the most expensive part!

Looks pretty slick, but how do you lower something with ratchet straps?

My garage has a steel I-beam from which I suspend a come-along to which I hang 2 cam-buckle nylon straps that go around the Monster's upper frame tubes. Meanwhile, the back end is on a stand. Works great. If you don't have an I-beam, a doubled 2 x whatever in your garage ceiling should work fine.
I'm looking for super simple. I don't have too much space to work with. :-\
try contacting Hiero here on the board.

I would say carefully and very slowly using the controlled free wheeling method.
I just use a front stand that lifts from the bottom center of the triple ~
JM
A rear stand + tie downs from the rafters.
mitt, no lateral support on the frame? How is swaying?
If you opt to go with the pit bull fork lift thing, check to make sure you don't have any cables routed through the steering stem or they will have to be moved.
Get an under-the-triple front stand. All the DIY stuff in this thread is fine if you have the space for it and the time to put it together or to rig something up. A front stand is the most convenient, the fastest and least space consuming way to do it.
That said, if you really wanna go DIY, use an opened ladder to suspend the front end of your bike.

Bike is a 2006 Monster 620 Dark
You just park the bike under a step ladder and run a strap through the frame and over the top of the ladder. I'm sure someone has a picture of it!

It also makes a great workstand to rivet a chain on

A floor jack with a bit of wood wedged into the area where the exhaust valve cover meets the cylinder head, just ahead of the fins. You'll need to do a bit of rough carpentry to get a horizontal base for the jack to bear the load securely
BUT any method of lifting from underneath guarantees the machine will fall over sideways sooner or later unless it's lashed to rafters, ladders or hooks in the walls

For demo purposes, could you set it up and take a photograph and post it? [thumbsup]

Here's how I did it to remove the front wheel:

You still need a rear stand to keep it stable side to side. If you're handy with a welder you can build one like this:

Thank you for the photographs...
Nice rearstand......The straps, what's the rating? ???

enough, even the cheapest $15 home depot straps will hold the bike up, your not lifting more than 200s up there ( hell i can pick the front end up with my bare hands)

My method... (beer not shown...) ;)
I only have 1/3 of a garage as the other 2/3 was converted to living space by the previous owner of the house. With so little room, I just built a wooden engine stand and lift the bike from the tail onto the stand.
unfortunately... all my jackstands are stuck under a 1965 mustang that's not going anywhere soon...

Thank you very much....Now I have an idea of something to fabricate, since I'll get the broken rearset welded[pls bear with my wallet, I'm unemployed at this time] and will use my rearstand+two jackstands supporting the frame from under the airbox.
