Title: anti-speeding commercial (graphic)
Post by: erkishhorde on April 27, 2009, 01:01:13 PM
One of the most graphic I've seen outside of those red asphalt videos.

methinks this deserves a "graphic" in the thread title..
disturbing shit...

that was harder to watch thank the Th!nk ads.

Edit: If I had millions of dollars, that would play during the superbowl every year. There's more graphic stuff on tv during primetime anyhow. At least this one comes with a message.

Looks like I am going to disagree with the general consensus.  I think people need to see this shit.  I'm tired of assholes yammering on the cellphone while yelling at their kids in the back seat.  People need to see what results from their inattention - people aside from the ones cleaning up the mess.  We see plenty that's way more graphic than the video shows.

+1. exactly what I was thinking. I was a big fan of the Th!nk ads. Nonsense that they aren't shown in the States, but CSI is quite alright for prime-time.

It was defiantly graphic, but it does make a statement.

Maybe that what it takes to get the message across to the desensitized audience.

Some of the best f*ing commercials I have ever seen.   [thumbsup]

It is hard to watch, but makes a great statement.

On the other hand, some may look at that and see actors in a mawkishly Donnie Darko (Patrick Swayze) styled presentation consisting of an argument based solely on emotion. I wouldn't be surprised if someone were desensitized after laughing at the painfully predictable and maudlin video.

Even this video attempts to use logical reasoning:
Speed kills ? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1PtpMs6pn4#lq-hq-vhq)

so the little pinky hooks at the end, is that supposed to be a sign for pinky-swear or tiny-pee-pee-syndrome?

Speeding...No one thinks big of you????????????

What a stupid f***ing tag line for this commercial !!

I really don't see a SINGLE incident related to SPEEDING.  It's all got to do with inattention, driving dangerously or driving without sufficient skill.  As usual the "idiots in command" don't want to face the real issues so they pick something easy.  Don't advocate better and higher training standards and responsible driving...just make people compensate with slower speeds.  That's the mark of a true politically correct bureacrat I guess.

And to those who find it disturbing.....YES it's graphic and YES it's disturbing.  It's also the way things happen.   Driving is serious business.

Okay..I'm finished ranting. [thumbsup]

1) decaf is good too.

2) the first half was telling people to pay attn to the road and what's going on outside of your car. the second part was about speeding and guys having to show off because they have tiny wangs.

Now there's World of Warcraft for the iPhone so you can also worry about a 16 y/o behind you driving while smiting a troll.

Back on topic, I agree wholeheartedly that the general public should realize driving is hard, requires skill and attention, and should be taken very very seriously. I however disagree with the whole "Speed Kills" angle. Every time I hear "speed was a contributing factor to the accident" I do the automatic translation to "we don't want to say the driver was a stupid dipshit that we should never have licensed, but we need to juke our stats to prove that our artificially low limits are just and need strong enforcement so we may fine (and therefore create revenue from) these evil evil people"

Saying speeding is the problem is too simple. The problem is much much greater and the solution is even more complex. Saying that though would be....shall we say....unpopular.

The one with the kid that walks into the street is kinda like an anti-texting bit. Although he's not driving, the inattention to his surroundings still factors in.

I admit that some of the stuff that happens is totally random and almost never happens but I still thought it was good enough to post. I felt kinda empty after I watched it and just thought it was something that should be passed on. I don't know why but something made me watch it a few times. The opening bit with the guy that hits the little red SUV and worries more about his own car first said a lot to me.

I'm gonna be an insensitive asshole here and and say that that video was make the beast with two backsing stupid. It was idiotic and detracted from the message that it tried to get across. Before anyone gets all worked up about it these are my reasons:

1- The video was made up of many other ad campaign videos. It tried too hard to bring across too many points. The viewer is left with no one particular message other than: if you get in or around a car YOU WILL DIE

2- An anti-speeding video where most of the accidents were not speeding related?

3- that GOD AWFUL SONG. Damn that is a bad song. I mean, shit, it made me want to take a drill to my ears to make it stop.  The only reason I kept on watching was to make this comment

4- The overly dramatic tone. The music and the filters make it a little *too* gaudy. It makes it even almost comical. The soap-opera feel that it has detracts from the realism that the original ads tried to convey, making it hard for the viewer to relate and make a connection to the events portrayed.

5- the absurdity of some of the scenes. I seriously laughed at the one with the teenagers texting each other.

6- It drags on forever. Yes, we get it already! There are only so many brains splattered and children with sad faces we can see before we become de-sensitized to them.

I thought it was clear that it was a compilation of several ads. Commercials aren't 4:00m long. That kind of nullifies your drags on forever / overly dramatic tone points. As I understand it, the originals were just a quick clip inserted between other commercials to catch people off guard. Like the over-dubbed song, it wasn't originally like that. That's also why the anti-speeding stuff isn't cohesive with the rest of the segment, wasn't meant to be. It was separate. Notice there are several "pinky" bits at the end, as though they were not originally together, but part of a larger ad campaign.

So essentially someone compiled it all and put it on youtube to satisfy his macabre fetish? :P

It's a euro thing but I've seen them on the interwebs. I thought they were good and should be aired in the states.

To get back on topic....

I saw it as a compilation of videos, with the speed commercial being the only one left complete with the final message because of the humor part to it.
The whole "No one thinks BIG of you"  line explaining the whole pinky motion is great!

As for the more graphic videos, I too think they should be shown maybe not so much on regular television, but at drivers training.  You can't handle the graphic images and you get sick... too bad, but I bet you won't forget those videos.  Thinking back to the lame ass videos they showed us when I was taking drivers ed, these would have done a far better job of getting the point across.

I say make some more, and when kids are in drivers ed... make 'em watch the videos every day before they leave so that they walk outside and see cars moving and relate the images they have just been shown with the real world.

Good video, thanks for posting.  I know the images I've seen will stick with me for a while... In a good way!

Wish I could find it, but years ago (like 20) I saw a pro helmet ad that simply had a watermelon falling off a truck and hitting the pavement in slow mo.

It didn't take much to imagine your head in the place of the melon, and the red goo coming out to be brains.

Not graphic, but the message worked.

One of my favorite ads was a Th!nk ad where a car stops at an intersection, checks left and right quickly and then starts going and a motorcyclist slams into the front of his car. Then they reshow the ad a bit slower and you see that he looked right at the motorcyclist and didn't see him.

The whole thing is he was supposed to check back right before pulling out but he didn't.
