Title: Low RPMs while idling and stall.
Post by: Chileno123 on April 27, 2009, 03:07:35 PM
Hey everyone,

So yesterday was in the high 80s in the DC area took the bike out.  Started it up and noticed that i had to put the choke almost the whole was down to warm it up.  Didn't think much of it.  I let it warm up for a bit, and went out.  Rode for about an hour and then parked it for an hour.  When I started it back up, it was idling so low that unless i revved it, or put the choke the whole way down it would stall..... Any ideas????

Thanks!

Carlo

What year and model of Monster do you have?

Might be running on one cylinder.  Pull off the plug wires one at a time.  If one kills it dead and the other makes no difference, one of your cylinders is not really running.

I have the same symptoms on my '02 620ie. Dealer says it needs the throttle bodies synched and the TPS set. I'm honestly not in any hurry to fix it, cause it idles fine when warmed up, and I'm getting 62 MPG.

Could it be the clutch?

It's a 2007 S2R 800.  Rode the bike again yesterday without any problems.  Not sure what's going on, but I'm a bit worried.

That would be highly doubtful.  Clutch issues are pretty easy to determine when in gear, and have no effect at all when in neutral.

Check the end connections on the ignition wires, make sure they are clean and solid.  Also, make sure the wires are not cracked and brittle.  If they look questionable you can replace them with new wire from Napa for a few dollars if you use the existing ends.  You can buy it by the foot and you don't need much.  One cylinder wire being a little flakey could be the explanation for how it's running.  Also, check the connections to the coils.  Make sure they are clean and solid, maybe dab a little dielectric grease on them to keep them from corroding.

How is performance off idle? Does it run with full power? If it does then you are running on both cylinders.

Sounds like you need a TPS and TB synch as said above... You could also raise the idle manually
