hey grandpa.. it's very easy really. I believe tafatnomos did it too. Here's how I did it although I'm sure there are much quicker easier ways to do it:

1) measure where you want to cut the pipes while it's still on the bike.. maybe make a note with some masking tape
2) take off both cans
3) drill out the rivets so you can slide the carbon fiber off
4) take off the caps
5) take off the carbon fiber
6) Put masking tape on the area where you will be cutting the carbon fiber.. use dremel.. measure twice, cut once
7) cut the steel wool and fiberglass packing with some good scissors and cut the perforated tube thats inside with a hacksaw to the same length as the carbon fiber
8) slide the carbon fiber over the fiberglass and align the lower holes and rivet on and then drill holes in the new top part of carbon fiber so you can rivet the end caps on
9) rivet the end caps back on
10) and enjoy.

I'll check to see what drill bit and rivet size I used and get back to you. oh BTW thanks for the stickers

READ THIShttp://www.fullforcerc.com/CarbonCare.htm (http://www.fullforcerc.com/CarbonCare.htm)  Some of it applies more to R/C cars, but you will get the idea.
Carbon fiber is nasty stuff because of the dust being so light and getting everywhere.  If you have access to a wet saw, that would be the way to go [thumbsup]

you should use a 3/16" drill bit to drill out the rivet and then use 3/16" short rivets when putting everything back together. Show us the final product if you go through with it  [thumbsup]
