Title: Is this a good deal for 00' monster 750
Post by: magazine on April 28, 2009, 06:11:00 PM
I'm looking at a 2000 model monster 750, it has 11k miles and in great shape except for a nice dent on left side of tank.  It has some not so attractive looking saddle bags on it but that might be a good thing.  Other than the dent, it looks great and runs perfect.  All for $2985.  I want something I can ride around town.  I've had several cruisers but nothing like this before.   Any suggestions?  Is this a good deal?  Any issues they may have?  ALso, how much is a replacement fuel tank for a bike like this?  I dont know if I will like having that dent.

First off welcome to the forum.  I don't think that's a bad price for that bike. Tank dents come standard on most older monsters and you would be better served to have it professionally repaired by someone who has experience with Ducs. Ducpainter on this forum can handle it for you. Ask when the last time the bike was serviced.  Timing belts should be replaced every two years or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Valve adjustments are every 6,000. MAKE sure the belts are in order before you plan on riding the bike. If you have any mechanical know how belts are very straightforward and simple to do yourself. Valve adjustments are a bit more in depth. Good luck with your purchase.

Well, the price is low, so even if it needs a bit of maintenance, you won't be doing too badly. Is the dent from the handlebar, or did someone whack it?

Seems like a good deal to me.  I just really didnt expect to want another bike since I just sold my last one in January.  Here it is, the one I am going to buy tomorrow if I have my way.  The sales person said it has a dent on the left side of the gas tank.  Thats all I know, other than him telling me it runs fine.

Looks good.  Let's see, tail chop, reflectors, mickey mouse mirrors, saddle bags, all got to go.  Sounds like a fun 1st hour with the new ride lol.

I'd say its a great deal. I bought my '99 750 a few years back for $3,500. It was in worse shape than this one. It had a terrible custom paint job. I replaced the tank with a beautiful tank I got from Chris @ Ca Cycleworks for $500.

I picked up my '99 M750 for  $3500 in 2003.  There was a small dent in the tank and the seat still has a scuff on it, but it gets covered with the seat cowl.

That sounds like a good deal.  I got my 2000 750 for $2,350.  But, it wasn't in ridable conditoin.  With the needed repairs, I was in over $3K.

I say, go ahead and buy it!  [thumbsup]

How do you guys like the 750?  I cant understand why it is priced so low.  I want to make sure I'm not getting something I wont be happy with.  Thanks for the replies!

The 750 is has lower HP numbers than the 695 but a bit better torque numbers, but not much.  I LOVE my M750, it's a '99 that's fairly stock with only Termignoni (modified) mufflers and clip-ons.  It doesn't have the snappy feel (probably because it's running way rich) of my FI 900SS, not huge power.  However, it's incredibly fun to ride, handles well also with some light suspension work.  I use it as my commuter and some weekend ripping around.  Mine has been very reliable, with no problems in 31,000 miles.

PM me if you have specific questions ~

It depends on you and what you are looking for.  My 750 is my first bike.  Some people may not be happy with it for long becaue it doesn't have enough power for them.  But, I suppose these are guys that are used to riding bigger, faster bikes.

For me, it has PLEANTY of power even after 1 1/2 years riding it.  I LOVE it and can't wait to keep moding it.  I don't dream about getting a bigger bike.  I dream about upgrading components on my bike (clip-ons, adjustable suspension, 5 spoke marchesinis etc).

I don't see myself trading up the 750 for a bigger bike anytime soon.  I may not even sell this one when I do.

that's a decent price, wonder why it's not modded more. Had mine since March of '01 and getting ready to click over to 30,000 miles. Stone cold reliable except for 2 faulty oil pressure sensors and a throttle cable that broke last summer.

I've had mine for a year now, my first bike as well.  I LOVE IT,  wife hates it - May be a good deal for the bike but a quick look at it and soon you'll be  needing this, and that, and that, and that :-) so many cool upgrades and toys. :-) - So far with mine I've only "NEEDED" to replace the spark plugs and Clutch Slave - not to bad! But their have been many packages at the door that have led to me spending a bit to much time in the basement and a few too many nights on the couch!! haha No - In all seriousness - BUY IT AND WELCOME

I bought am 00 M750 as a first bike when it was two years old.  I've found it to be plenty torquey around town, and while the top end isn't eye-popping, it's decent enough to get you arrested anywhere other than places that feature Armco and striped curbing.

The stock brakes work nicely, probably even better than you expect for a single disc setup.  The feel could be better; but, fish around and you'll see aftermarket systems that'll take care of that.  It's not urgent, though - I rode the stock setup for 25k.

As for handling, it's a narrow, reasonably light scooter with a set of handlebars apparently copied from a longhorn.  Clearance is fine for anything I care to do on the street.  Bottom line?  You'll be able to throw it around with impunity.  It'll take it, and whisper in your ear that you should do it again, only harder.

Actually, it'll bellow that in your ear, 'cause with aftermarket cans, the sound is...is...*intensely satisfying*.-  it's deep and boomy, with lots of mechanical noises (desmodromic goodness, among other clacks and clicks) overlaid.

It hasn't been entirely glitch free - had to replace a left control pod; slave cylinder; master cylinder; and fuel pump diaphragm; but, nothing crippling, from a cost standpoint.  Not to mention, as an incorrigible, frequent downshifter, the clutch bits get credit for lasting as long as they did.

The feared valve adjustment?  Yup, you'll need to check clearances every 6k; but, in my case, it usually has been just a check by the dealer, rather than an actual adjustment.

Summing up the ownership experience:  seven years and 30k later, I still look back and smile when I walk away.  I will own other bikes; but, I've decided there's no good reason to ever sell this one.

I just got off my wife's '00 750 dark, its a blast, and runs and sounds great since she bought it second hand in 2004. It seems much lighter than my fi 00 '900- definitely doesn't have as much pull as the 900, but is quite fun to ride. Bigget thing I notice is the single front disc on the 750. And she needs some new tires, I think the back might be original!
