Title: m900 motor swap issues
Post by: darkduc7 on April 28, 2009, 10:00:15 PM
ok, so heres my dillemma. i had a 2001 M600, and got bored. so, im swapping in a 1995 M900 motor. cool, except im running into all the little crap i didnt think of, even though i thought i had done my homework, and its 70 effin degrees out. among other things, my current question is:

the '95 900 motor has a 2 phase (i think) charging system. my old '01 600 motor had a three phase. now, i have the whole harness from the donor motor as well as the existing one in my frame...and im hoping that im not gonna have to do an entire harness swap, since ive already physically installed the said donor motor. my logic tells me that all i should have to do is swap out the regulator/rectifier whatever thingy, and things will be slick. am i correct in this? and also, since the older, 2 phase regulator has fewer wires, what ones do i hook up/ combine/leave unconnected? god, i hope this makes sense :o

thanks for any input, i just cant wait to have this pos project finished and to be riding!!!!!

Why not swap the three phase alternator out of the 600 motor?

You may need a different cover.

use the 3 phase reg, just leave one of the reg input yellow wires not connected to anything.  easy.

2 phase and 3 phase covers are different, you'd need to swap the crank to use 3 phase in the older motor.

I'm glad Brad spoke up.

I didn't know the cranks were different too.  [bang]

+1 on brad's comments (obviously).

Just hook your 2-wires from the 900 onto ANY two of the three terminals on your 3-wire regulator.  DONE.  [thumbsup]

thanks guys! i hate electrical stuff...so i should be good to just hook up less input wires from the motor? works for me, cause its easy, unlike the rest of this project. im sure i will have a few more questions to post on here as i finish up  [bow_down]
