Title: ie Fuel Filter non-OEM
Post by: WTSDS on April 30, 2009, 07:17:23 AM
After reading all available DMF posts I've been to several national ( Oz ) auto parts shops seeking a fuel filter, armed with a list of makes and part numbers said to be equivalent  eg NAPA 3032,  Framm G2

The real thing is made of metal, and I keep being shown plastic filters like this Purolator 20011

I'm thinking the insides of these plastic thingies must be fuel resistant , right,  and I'm supposing the outside must be also, but dunno, not too happy about putting one in my tank, prefer to have a metal one.

Wondering if the DMF info about aftermarket replacement filter alternatives is correct ? ?

The carbed Monsters have a plastic filter, and I'm currently using a plastic filter from Auto Zone on my M750.  That being said, my filter is on the bottom of my tank on the outside.  However, if the gas stays INSIDE my plastic one, I'm sure it's safe for gas to be on either side of the outer shell ~

fitment into the clippy-do isn't perfect, but it works

i've never found a local direct alternative.  the bmw boxed one - 16142325859 - is cheaper than the ducati one -42540041B.  i'm stocking the same part with the generic mahle brand on it.  more expensive than the napa one tho.

this filter looks like a replacement for a carbed monster. the filter for a fuelie monster is somewhat different, i'm betting.
just keep that distinction in mind, as you hunt.

Another thought, mount it outside the tank.  I just installed a Napa 3032 and saw this mod while looking up details, can't find the post now.  Basically, you run an extra section of hose inside the tank in place of the filter and then cut the delivery line outside the tank and put the filter in line, zip tie it to the crank case breather line to keep it from bobbling around.  I didn't do this but it makes future filter swaps easy and no worries about fuel on the outside of the filter.

But remember, the fuel pump generates some pressure so you want a filter that can handle that.  The Napa 3032 is a sturdy metal unit.
