Title: New Pursuit Vehicle
Post by: Monster Dave on April 30, 2009, 01:07:45 PM
Thoughts? It's a rendering on another site that I saw today. Looks pretty nasty to me (in a good way).

Reminds me of the days of the Mustangs:

They meant business in those days!!

I think the ink is drying on the agreement to buy some Holden Commodores for use as patrol cars.  I'd bet that Camaros are much less practical (though way cooler) as a  [leo] car:

why does it say "POTS" on the first one?

It doesn't, it says 9OT2

why does it say "POTS" on the first one?

The picture just caught the beginning of a scrolling banner that says:

Pot Smokers Beware!!

 ;D

Why buy new pursuit cars when they aren't even allowed to pursue anyway?

How practical were the 'Stangs? Similar to this I imagine. Plus, it looks cool as shit...

Well, it has to accommodate a fair amount of essential  [leo]  [leo] cargo.

IIRC, one of the reasons that the Mustang was chosen over the Camaro back in the '80's was that the CHP could mount a standard 12ga shotgun in a vertical holding bracket between the front seats in the 'Stang.   The Camaros had a much lower roofline, so they would've had to saw off too much of the shotgun to make them fit in a vertical mount.   ;D

If robbers can deal with the sawed off shotgun, why not the cops?  [roll]

Back in the day (prolly late 80's / early 90's) Michigan State Police had a couple IROC-Z's with ZR-1 motors stuffed in them.

For years the NC SHP was running some unmarked Camaros with 'Vette spec LS1 engines.

Robbinsville, NC (closest NC town to Deal's Gap) has some very very quick and mean Camaros of the last generation.  They used them primarily to go motorcycle hunting between Robbinsville & Deals Gap ~

there's a bedroom suburb i have to drive through. They have almost no businesses or tax base, but they do have 3 miles of interstate. They use unmarked dodge chargers. Somehow they're able to balance their budget.  ;)

Here's another far more likely candidate for a new cruiser:

Here's what was said about it: Built on a purpose-built chassis and using a 300 HP, 420 Lb-Ft of torque forced-induction diesel, the 4,000 Lb E7 will run 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, top out at 155 MPH and return 28-30 MPG in normal use. More importantly, it's designed to a 250,000-mile durability spec. Faster, more economical and longer lasting than current cop cars, but it's what inside that really counts; the E7 has been designed around the police officers specific needs.

Current cruisers, modified versions of civilian cars, are far from ideal for police use. The necessary additions — radios, computers, donut holders — often get added with little to no thought or testing to how they'll perform in a crash, often becoming lethal projectiles in an impact. Seats aren't built for 8-hour-long shift, controls aren't created with control in mind, communications and computer equipment gets spec'd for cost, not capability.

The E7 integrates all its features neatly into a cohesive package. Check out the faired-in lights all over the bodywork — better for aerodynamics. The seats are made to support large and in-charge cops and accommodate utility belts full of cuffs, batons and handguns. Heated and cooled cup holders complement the A/C fans incorporated in the headrests for year-round comfort. All computing and communications take place through the huge dash-mounted touch screen while gadgets like radar speed detectors, 360° surveillance cams and automatic license plate recognition cameras abound. It even has biohazard and weapons of mass destruction detectors integrated in neat trunk-mounted NACA ducts.

 [thumbsup] That's cool!!

More ominous though, and the one that gets my vote:

i wouldn't say it's far more likely.  it's far better, but whether budgets will be used to revamp fleets is a different story (and if the company will float long enough to sustain that critical mass).

Just like the larger governments, the smaller ones will typically go with the lowest bidder. I'm sure that Chevy and Ford, hell even Dodge with the Charger sold the vehicles at a loss just to get them out there and seen.

Most smaller agencies piggyback onto larger agencies purchase agreements. In the end it's all about the lowest bidder.

one of the guys i used to train with is a state trooper. he told me that if i ever saw a bright yellow mustang sitting at the top of a service ramp on the PA tpk that i should either floor it and hope they get caught in traffic or make the guy upset and just pull over right away.

it was a purpose built car meant to snag people going 80 and above.

the township where i work has a couple of blacked out chargers. they look super bad ass and cool.

those are pretty amazing vehicles.  Here's an article I read on CNN a couple months ago http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/23/high.tech.cop.car/index.html?iref=newssearch (http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/23/high.tech.cop.car/index.html?iref=newssearch)

one thing I never thought about and you can see it in one of the pictures, the front seats are designed with a recess for the officer's utility belt.  The seatbelts in the rear seat are designed, i read, to accommodate cuffed suspects.  And the rear seat belts buckle on the outside.  cool stuff.

good choice going diesel.  those things will last forever.

Those E7 cars also have a drain plug in the back so they can just be spayed out with a hose after people puke or make a mess back there. And its all sealed off from the front so none of that nasty stuff migrates to the front.

Title: Re: New Pursuit Vehicle
Post by: Monster Dave on May 15, 2009, 08:25:21 AM
It's a great candidate, but for all the "bling" that it has, I'm guessing that the cost per unit will be too high to be the winning vehicle for a city bid.
