I feel STUPID! Just picked the bike up from the shop for the fuel mixture issue. In the mean time I had the clutch cover painted at a local body shop, when leaving in a hurry, I couldn't find my hex key to replace the cover. I pulled out of the shop, while at a red light, I moved forward slowly, my pants got caught in the clutch, broke the spring, retainer and pin off at the drum. Broke off the post to the drum. Bike would not go into gear at first, then only 1-3 at random, also the bike tries to lurch forward, I can only hold it back with the brakes. Where can I find the part I need, and how much is this going to cost me? I'm doing this myself. I can't afford to keep taking this to the shop. I feel like a BIG IDIOT!. I talked with a buddy who's a Ducati mechanic, he said it should be a simple fix, the damage minimal. I can't believe a pair of $100 Guess jeans could break molded metal.

Sorry to hear about your mishap.
If you have the tools, its a pretty easy fix...you can swap in a new clutch hub within an hour. :)
Thanks for the quick reply. I have a few questions:
1. What tools will I need for the job? Clutch basket holding tool?
2. What are the chances I damaged anything else, what should I look for while I have it apart, besides any apparent wear?
3. I'm thinking of going with a slipper clutch. I've heard from I may lose performance.
Again, thank you for taking the time to help. It's just been an ordeal with this bike.
I wonder if this will work?

Quick 'fix', remove the spring and retainer opposite to the broken one.
4mm allen wrench is all that's required.
Ride. :)
To replace the hub, you need a big socket and an impact gun.
I *think* the socket is a 32mm, not sure though, I just grab the one that fits out of my toolbox...
Wow, that sucks. I ride with no clutch cover, occasionally ride with jeans, and have never come close to catching my pants on it...

Quick fix as in? To get it home? Left it at the shop. I just can't see paying them when I can do this myself.

---------snip-----------
Absolutely. ;)
Some folks even remove 2 springs just to ease the lever pull.

Just remove the opposite spring and try it out. You *might* like it better that way.
So could be a permanent/temp fix till I decide to replace with a slipper/lightened clutch assembly? Would a pressure plate stabilizer help?

Yep.

IMO, those are just pure functionless bling.
One might keep your pants from snagging again, so I suppose some functionality....

Easiest fix is Speeddog's way. And then put the clutch cover back on!
Dammit boys, we have a winner! Thank y'all so much. My ego was bruised, as it should be. My weekend trip to Gatlinburg was ruined cause I thought I'd surely torn the hell out of the bike. Now if I can find these Guess jeans again. ;)
In case you're wondering what's going on, the broken post is throwing off the balance of the springs so when you pull your clutch lever it tries to push out crooked and that's why it's not fully disengaging. Removing the opposite spring alleviates this problem.
The real fix to get it back to the way it was is to buy a new clutch hub. Funny that you should have this happen. I know it happens but I hadn't seen a thread about it on the board in a while but then He Man just broke his recently too. Check out this thread for the replacement clutch hub stuff. http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=22736.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=22736.0)

Thanks for that, I'm learning piece by piece about this bike. I chose a Duc because I wanted to run in a different pack, I love naked bikes, and I just fell in love with it.

No problem, I know not everyone is the mechanical type and we don't always understand the solutions posted here and just take them at face value as the fix. Good on you for wanting to do it yourself. I updated my post with a link to another thread that has clutch hub info if you want to actually fix it. At least you didn't have the post break off while riding like he did.
Awesome, thanks. I'm buying the VeeToo kit after I make a promised purchase from a fellow board member.
Can I have the broken hub? I weld them back together for poor folks (like me).

Just an fyi - that's a hub from and old bevel drive Duc - won't work for you.

I didnt break it while riding... Whats up with people putting words in my mouth?
If you are going to buy the veetwo hub, buy it from vee two directly, you save a shit ton. Its $120 bucks (+35 shipping) to buy it from Vee two in Australia, and $260 from Desmotimes. If you buy their clutch drum and basket together its only $320 or something, about the same as an MWheels one, which i recently found out, you can ONLY buy a pack of 6 Ti posts if you ever go down, how long will it take you to use all 6 of those posts? not quite sure, probably never.
Also,if you swap to a plate that covers the spring, your jeans might not get caught so easily, personally i dont wear jeans that are loose enough to get caught on the bike anywhere ( i havegotten my pants cuaght on the slave bleeder nipple a few times), and if you use a clutch cover ( any kind) you should be fine.

how common is it for you to run into someone who has a snapped post?

Well, you said the bike was running and idling and post blew off. Even if you weren't actually moving you were riding since you were on it, yes? [roll]
I've wondered though... In He Man's case, the screw backed out and and hit his clutch cover and then snapped the post. In four's case it got caught on his jeans, ripped a hole and once the jeans were wound around the spring cap tightly, snapped the post. If you had a titanium post, it wouldn't have broken. So, in He Man's case, would his clutch cover have broken or maybe just the screw? I think the probability of the clutch freezing up would go up. In four's case I think either his pants would have gotten a chunk torn off or it would have wound up even more and possibly caused a leg injury if the post didn't break because it was titanium. The more I think about it, the less I think that titanium posts are a good idea. Sometimes having stuff break is a good thing because it keeps other things from breaking...

Im not trying to be an ass or anything, i guess it just came out wrong, lately people have been saying i did this and that, and im just wondering where half the stuff comes from.
But just to for fun....the OP was on the bike and lurching foward, so how can you say "atleast you didnt have the post break of while riding like he did". if i was just idling? just messing with you man, im still upset over the Rangers losing. :'(
But anyway, i posted up pics of the recovered pieces, i dont believe ti posts would be that beneficial, the piece would be so hard, if the same thing happened, the bolt would snap instead. and if the bolt didnt snap, im pretty sure the posts would bend, and if there was beonugh force, it would stall the engine, and if ithe engine didnt stall, it would probably rip the whole hub out.
but personaly, i think they made them in Ti to guard against crashing, where the post might be exposed and grind out. if it was aluminum it would wear out pretty quickly and your engine would be next, if it was Ti, it would atleast last a while. but at the same time, youd have to wear through the slider pucks and the clutch cover, and the spring cap and part of the spring.
But regardless of which, erkishhorde, your def right, if one thing doenst give, something else will, and better the post then the engine seizing. and other shit breaking.

Oh yeah... Forgot about that... [roll] You win. [laugh]
I had to replace my clutch hub. It cost me 140 from the dealer. Had to wait a week cause they had to order the part.
Worked like a charm guys. Thanks for all the 411.
