Title: Free horse. Post by: Speedbag on May 17, 2008, 05:32:23 AM I'll leave out the boring details to keep this short, but I have essentially "inherited" a 1996 Mustang GT.
Car is bright red with tan leather, 5-speed, only 46,000 on the clock. Not a flaw in the exterior, save a rock chip or two. Only thing wrong with it otherwise is the cruise control quit working for some unknown reason. White trash jokes aside ;), I can't decide whether to keep it or sell it. I had a 2001 Bullitt a while back, and although that car was a total hoot, it was insurance hell despite my spotless record so I got rid of it (needed a truck worse at the time anyway). I assume this car will be similar to insure, although I could probably insure it through a special-interest place as an occasional driver instead of through a normal carrier. It would probably sit most of the time like my '67 Cougar does, although it is marginally more practical than the cat (and gets 25 MPG if you behave). Car is fun to drive, but a tad down on power compared to later offerings. If I kept it, one thought was to find an '03-'04 Mach 1 engine out of a wreck to swap in (and toss a Vortech on for good measure) and get back into a little drag racing. If I sold it, the jing would be a nice chunk to dump into the future S4Rs/naked-1098 fund. :) Thoughts? Title: Re: Free horse. Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: herm on May 17, 2008, 06:58:33 AM sell it and buy a late 60's camaro ss (convertible) [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: kutter on May 17, 2008, 07:05:47 AM Better have a lot of extra jack hanging around to with it to find a 60's SS [evil]
Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: Airborne on May 17, 2008, 09:29:35 AM The 4.6 is expensive to squeeze real power out of. I'm sure you know this already as you said you've owned the bullitt. I think they made the 95 in that generation body style with the 5.0, that would be a different story.
I have an 03' gt. I'm keeping her stock for the most part. Title: Re: Free horse. The '96-'98 cars have the poochier engine. Like you say, if it were a '95 with the 5.0.... However, I see Ford Racing sells the new GT500 mill as a crate engine. Hmmm..... [evil] Sorry, no Camaros on my property. [cheeky] Although that convert sure is sweet. :) Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: herm on May 17, 2008, 05:29:58 PM ok by me.
i owned a 96 mustang very briefly, and have had a ford truck for 195,000 miles [thumbsup] Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: ROBsS4R on May 17, 2008, 06:23:44 PM Quote If it was a 66...I'd keep it. I had a 66 about 12 years ago. I wish I hung onto it but I had a crappy job at the time and could not afford to keep it running [bang] Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: somegirl on May 17, 2008, 10:33:53 PM <---- Disappointed, I thought you got a real horse.

She was a handful. Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: c_rex on May 18, 2008, 12:04:36 AM My mom had a '68 SS that she bought brand new. I think she paid something like $2500. :o
I had to have one when I was young so I bought a p.o.s. '68 with a 327 and automatic transmission. Not the most desireable of it's kind but I had that thing up on two wheels once and I'll never forget that car. Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: Statler on May 18, 2008, 05:01:51 AM turn it into a kit car cobra.
Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: Monsterlover on May 18, 2008, 06:31:20 AM Good idea except we all know a 4.6 has no business in a Cobra ;)
Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: DesmoDog on May 18, 2008, 06:52:29 AM When I first read this I thought it said '66, not '96. I would sell the '96.
But then, I sold my '66 a couple years ago too, so what do I know? (http://www.teamyikes.com/Resources/MustangHome.jpg) Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: ejw24 on May 18, 2008, 10:04:03 AM I had a 2000 GT I bought new right after college. I loved that car and it was a kick in the ass for a 22 year old kid! I sold it after 3 years, just couldn't take another Colorado winter in it.
I'd keep the car and drive the hell out of her, a free car is a free car. Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: Monsterlover on May 18, 2008, 02:43:16 PM Don't forget to post the obligatory burnout video.
Title: Re: Free horse. Post by: Jaman on May 19, 2008, 12:54:50 PM Sell it.
Based on the year & color alone, your license & insurance premiums/checkbook will thank you. I had a red '96 for a year & spent most of the time either pulled over, in court, or driving on a suspended license. ;D Oh yeah, & +1 on the burnout vid! [thumbsup] Title: Re: Free horse.
