what howie said, but im from brooklyn, we have our own board (though its pretty quiet)
I am in Westchester County
The city folk call it "upstate" ;D
I was on the phone once and im talking to some random dude in westchester county, and i tell my friend, yea im upstate, he starts laughin his ass off and goes dude were like 20 minuoutes outside the city.
Its funny what "we" the people who live inside nyc (not including staten island and eastern queens) consider to be upstate. its really anything where the train dont go.
And when you say "the city" you mean Manhattan.
That always cracked me up when I lived in Brooklyn.
When people would say they are going to the city I would tell them that they are in the city and they would argue.
Then when they would say they are going to Long Island I would tell them that they are already on the island. I even had to show some people a map to prove that Brooklyn and Queens were part of Long Island.
silentbob, born and raised in brooklyn?
I lived in NY most of my life. I moved out in 2000 to CA, moved back in 2001, and moved back to CA in 2003.

+1. I'm in Astoria, Queens and hear this a lot.
If in a borough other then manhatttan, you say the name of the borough, if it is brooklyn, i just say the neighborhood.
If in midtown, its called the city.
If in downtown, say how far you are from china town, brooklyn bridge or battery park.
If in LES, then you're in the east or west village. or usually You just say xx blocks from houston/bleeker/etc big name streets
Anything past 100th streetfollows the same rules as brooklyn neighborhoods.
Thats pretty much what everyone i know uses.

You are upstate. Yonkers is not. Then again, to a true Manhattanite, the Bronx is upstate :P

+1 on european cycle services ECS.
in NYC we pronouce houston street as "house-ten street" ;D
i've been in NYC since '72 (manhatten, brooklyn, staten island). back then when i would say i live in SI, everyone thought it was NJ [roll]
actually it might as well have been "joyzee" [laugh]
doing the bi-coastal thing at the moment between LA and NYC.
I LOVE NY but it is not exactly a motorcycle friendly state like CA...
I guess I will make it +2 for ECS ;D
NJ had the balls to claim the rights to the Statue of Liberty Once, which is why that state is rated R for retarded.

Kings county (Brooklyn) was named after the King of England. Queens county named after the Queen. York (Manhattan) named after the Duke of York. Richmond county (Staten Island) was named after the King's bastard son. Very fitting when you consider Staten Island is the bastard county of New York. I always pretended it was part of Jersey too. It is also home to the largest man made structure in North America, the Arthur Kill Landfill.

They also claim the rights to our sports teams and they can't drive worth a damn. They are so bad that the state had to make left turns illegal because it was too difficult a concept for them.

yes, couldn't agree more...bastard county. crazy attitudes in SI. i got out as fast as i could.
and the landfill was SI's claim to fame but back in the 80's it was actually THE largest in the world!
The Dyker Heights. [thumbsup]
I suppose to you went to dyker and Utrecht?
Another + for ECS! Anyone notice a trend here?
+1 for Steve..

i'm in chinatown...what used to be the last frontier for gentrification. but alas...you can't stop "progress" [roll]
past 100th i'd consider that harlem which has really come a long way in the past 10yrs.
but i usually stick below 14th St unless i'm in central park. anyone been to the hudson bar at the hudson hotel? lot's of beautiful women the last time i was there... ;D

Nope, just a fun jumper.
I think I'd call anything north of the TZB "upstate". If you're north of Albany, you might as well be in Canada. ;)
Just like you new yorkers... stay in your little circle and tell yourself how great you are for paying way too much for everything and dealing with shitty weather. :P
as far as drivers.... shit I knew at least 5 kids in college from nyc who didn't get their drivers license until they left that place!
I have also found that once you take a new yorker out of 'the' city, they become clueless and lost.
There should be signs on all the bridges and tunnels out of the city that say "get over yourself" 8)
shut up, you're from jersey, no one cares about you.
