I know parts of this have been covered, but I have a few questions that I can't find the answers to:
1) Is it really necessary to purchase the 41/46mm combo socket if you aren't removing the wheel? I can buy a 41mm socket for about $25.
2) Does anyone have any pics on the final product that they can post. I am confused as to the proper orientation of the quick change carrier/sprocket/bolts combo.

you need to remove the nut somehow, i picked up a individual sockets on ebay for $25 for both. and have used them over 30 times, 12 point.
Does the 41mm (chain side) nut turn by itself, or do I need to stabilze the 46mm side while I turn the 41mm?

You'll either need to stop the axle from spinning somehow, or use an impact gun.

the nuts dont spin with the axle so u can do it with the bike on the sidestand if u wanted to, which is how i would do it since that rear stand is in the way on the left.

So, is the quick change carrier installed in this pic? I thought it did away with the old sprocket carrier...

It's hidden behind (what ducati calls) the sprocket flange. You can slightly see it. It's the black part between the silver parts.
I was hoping it was going to be visible after the install, but it is what it is...

best bet without an impact is to have a friend sit on the bike, hold it upright and keep his foot on the brake while you twist it off.
I have an impact driver, so I guess as soon as the 41mm impact socket I ordered today arrives, I will be good to go.

i meant you dont have to hold one down to spin the other like a nut and bolt.....well..come to think about it, you have to hold the wheel down which is an extention of the axle, so i guess you do. lol
eitherway, id just keep the bike on the floor, better yet, have someone sit on the bike while you loosen it.
A friend with a foot down on the rear brake worked fine for me when I removed the 41mm nut on my S2R to do this same job. I don't remember what I spent on the 41/46 socket, but it was a decent price from someone on eBay.
Install the sprocket to the carrier before you put the carrier on, as it's a bit of a PITA to get the bolts in from the back if you don't have a rearstand.
Generally, the stamped numbers on the sprocket face outward.
Put a light coating of grease on the 'nose' of the sprocket flange that goes into the carrier, and a little grease on the splines as well.
You'll need an allen wrench or driver to tighten the nuts on the cush drives.
IIRC, it's a 12mm, but confirm that before you buy.
You may not *have* to loosen the cush drives for disassembly/reassembly, but it'll likely be a struggle if you don't.
